I ain't gonna lie, bro. It's bro, people have egos. I'm not really an ego-driven guy. I'm a fact driven guy. That's why I can factually say I'm better than motherfuckers, too. The One More Time Music Podcast. Genuine conversations with genuine people about music. Hosted by Henry with a three and playback Ben. We're from Bemo Coops to Pissarts. Tomorrow distant is we'll pay that one more time. Pine one more time. Pine Sheila, one more time. They find that one more time. One more time. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back for another episode of the One More Time Podcast. I'm your host, Playback Ben here with my co-host, Henry with a three, aka the Antitorial King. That's a new one, but you are that. Yes. Henry, who do we have in the hot seat today, my friend? Welcoming in on episode 65 of the One More Time podcast, Rising Atlanta artist. It's Kenny Mason. No, bro. Kenny was the guy on the left in the picture I sent you, bro. That's not Kenny.
That's not Kenny. But that is, I am Kenny. I am Kenny. See? Who killed Kenny? Shout out to Kenny Mason. Shout out to Kenny Mason. We do want to get Kenny Mason on the podcast, though. So hopefully Marco might be able to hook that up. Hell you. but yeah, this is another Atlanta rising star in the rap game. This is Marco Plus. Don't get it twisted. Hey! What the fuck going on, guys? What's Good, my guy. What's happening? Chilling, man. Smoking some weed. So I know you mentioned you were scared to bring weed to the uh podcast. I don't like riding in cars with weed. Fair enough. I ain't about that riding in cars with weed. Like, I'm sorry. I'm just not. But on a scale of one to ten, how high are you right now? I'm like a four and a half, five. Okay, so this will be a little bit more. I'm more tipsy than I am out right now. There you go. We did get him a little liquored up before this episode. So guilty. We hear it. For sure. So are you a papers, blunts, or a glass kind of guy? Blunts. When I'm in New York, I smoke spliffs because it's like blunts be kind of hard to find. But yeah, I like I like smoking backwards, man.
For sure. Definitely in my smoking days, I was a spliff king. Like I would smoke like 10 spliffs a day type of deal. That was my vice for sure. Had a spliff face for sure. And that's how I got into you know, even you know, smoking tobacco at all was during my spliff days. Like grab a dangerous thing. Yes, it could be. Absolutely. When did you first start smoking weed? I was about 15. I started smoking with my cousin. Um he was also the same person I started drinking with. I was like 18 when that happened. Shout out to him. Yeah, man. Yeah, we was in I was in Florida. First time I didn't even get high. I did not even get high. I know what you mean. Yeah. First time. It's like you don't know how to inhale yet. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Do you remember the first time getting caught smoking weed uh by your mom? Bro, I've been caught smoking weed so many times, I don't even know. I can tell you the first time I got actually like physically caught smoking weed. Yeah, tell us that story. my nigga, me and my big brother so fucking stupid. Bro, we literally smoked in the house, right?
Like, as soon as these folks leave to go to their respective jobs, my mom and my stepdad or a former stepdad. So peep, the nigga, like they come back like 30, like like 15 minutes after we started smoking. Bro, that I'm gonna just say that shit was the craziest experience ever, bro. That was the craziest shit ever. Yeah, it got lit. It got lit. Because they like forgot something at the house. Yeah, they forgot something. They come back, it smells like weed in the house. Like, oh man. Oh man. I I felt that in my soul when I heard that story. I was like, we've all been there. We're like, you think the coast is clear, so you spark up. Coast is never clear. It was not. That was the dumbest decision I ever made. Okay. Yeah, how'd you handle that? I ain't gonna lie, I don't I that shit was fucked up. I don't know how to like you just gotta apologize a million times. Just a million sorries. Yeah, my bad. Yeah, don't make don't make no noise for like a month. Like, you know what I'm saying?
Yeah, don't make a peep, don't do nothing bad. You're on probation. You're on probation, yeah. Parental probation. Parental probation. That's that's facts. So The Smoker's Club posted a kind of behind the scenes snippet of you working on your upcoming LP, the Southside Villain. Yeah, the Southside villain LP. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What can we expect from that project in comparison to you know, maybe the the previous project? South got something to say. More disrespectful raps. Okay. Um it's still it's still introspection. It's still, you know what I'm saying? I'm still talking about myself and shit, but it's more, it's more so like uh it's a it's a feeling, it's a theme, you know what I mean? Like it's a real like, like, yo, this is what it is. I don't really give a fuck. It's a, it's a it's unapologetic as hell. You know what I mean? It got like a real sinister vibe. It got it's like it's a mix of shit, though. It's not like super duper hip hop, it's not super duper trap, nothing like that. It's it's a vibe for sure.
It's a vibe for sure. So are you playing this villain character like throughout the project? Honestly, it ain't I ain't even gonna say that, right? I it's like life, bro. Like, motherfuckers can paint you as a villain by how you choose to handle shit, like in situations or how you say shit. So it's other people's perceptions just as much as yours. Yeah, but you gotta own it too. So I guess it's like, yeah, you know what I'm saying? To answer your question. Yeah, okay. Yeah, so so what's your approach to making a body of work, right? Like, you know, whether it's South got something to say or the South Side villain, for example. Like, like how do you even like step into, hey, I'm working on this project? Like, how do you, how do you go from there, right? Like, what's your process? Like, to be honest, I just start rapping. I don't even like, I don't really come with a concrete idea until I start rapping. Once I figure out, like, once I hear how these songs I've I was making sound, then I kind of feel like, okay, this can turn into this. But it always kind of like evolves into something else.
Like the South Got Something to Say was not supposed to be an album. It was supposed to be like an EP. And it wasn't even supposed to be named that. Like, I was supposed to be like five songs, six songs or some shit. And I just kept working because I'm fucking crazy. Like I just and you were in that bag. You were feeling that. bag. Yeah, exactly. That was gonna be my third album of the year. And that was the one for sure. But yeah, it's like, damn, I forgot the I forgot the question. No, I just think you know, your approach to making a body of work. So you realized you were making some darker and more sinister songs, so you kind of formulated the the concept behind that. Yeah, exactly. Exactly, exactly. And not even really I like it's really like the the shit I'm saying, like motherfuckers can understand that at this point in my life, I don't really give a fuck about what nobody else could say anymore. Like I kind of gotta get it how I live with this rap shit specifically. Was there like a moment in time where like the light switch flipped, right? To to have that mentality, or have you kind of always had that approach? I always kind of had that approach, but when I got when I got signed, and like it's just something that's show that's that showing me like I gotta kind of be a little more selfish.
You know what I'm saying? Like, not with not with the people alongside myself or nothing like that, but really how I give a fuck about shit. Like I can't get I can't give a fuck about much, you know what I mean? Yeah, I feel like selfish always gets painted in this very negative way when sometimes you do have to be that. Yes. Because we're all people trying to get through this shit called life, right? Exactly. And like if we're not selfish to a certain point, it's gonna be terrible, I feel like, right? Like if you don't live each day at least trying to make yourself happy, how the fuck can you even make other people happy, anyways? It's the whole, you know, you gotta love yourself to be able to love others. Love everybody else. Right. So, you know, so you mentioned that the five songs turned into I think 19 in another interview. Yeah, right. Like, yeah, bro. So is is a song or a body of work ever done to you? Like, could you just keep going for it? Like, you know, could you have made it like a 50 song project? I ain't gonna lie, bro. Man, alright, I ain't even gonna get into the Southside of LP shit. All right.
But yeah, bro, I could have made that shit. I could have, I could have added, I could have made that bitch 20 songs. Like, I'm gonna tell you the truth. That shit was really 17 songs and two skits. I could have made it 19 songs. Yeah. Like, dead ass. But I ain't gonna lie, I'm from a I'm 24, but I'm from a different era. I like long ass albums. I like three-verse songs. Uh like all that shit. You know what I'm saying? That's that's not really the supreme approach I'm taking with the Southside Villain LP. You know what I'm saying? It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, It's a it's a it's a it's a it's a it's a it's a nice amount of songs on there for sure. But it's not like I'm not trying to bust people over the head just yet. Mm-hmm. You know what I'm saying? I just gave them a bunch a year ago, not even a year ago. Um the singles are great. Everybody know what the hell I'm about now. Uh now it's time to show motherfuckers like how different it can get. Because everybody thinks I'm just like, I just want to be the super lyrical guy. Yeah, that's cool, but that's just how I am.
I can't help that I'm fucking better than niggas. Like dead ass. Bruh. Like, nigga, I don't try to be better than motherfuckers. I don't. Motherfuckers try to be better than me. That's the life I have. I've never been Vegeta. Like, dead ass. So it's just like, it's easy. It's easy to do that. But the hard part is trying to dial that shit back and make some great songs that motherfuckers want to motherfucking listen to while still being able to rap good. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Yeah. bro. Like a Kendrick DNA kind of thing. You had to like team up with like a Mike Will and do some shit and say, I can do this too. Exactly. Yeah, it's it's almost sad to admit, but like dumbing it down, like you kind of have to, bro. Yeah. I wouldn't even say it's dumbing it down. It's like it's I'm gonna tell you what it is. It's really giving motherfuckers who already have a certain light on you a different way of looking at shit. You know what I'm saying? Like, let them shake their fucking head more. I'm not even really dumbing it down.
Cause I ain't gonna lie, my rhyme schemes and what I'm saying is always gonna be ridiculous. It's just it's maybe a little more opened up. Yeah, it or I ain't even gonna lie, it's probably a little more tight, it's a little tighter for me. Like, you know what I'm saying? Cause I'm rapping faster, and you gotta kind of compile shit faster when you do like a triplet flow or a faster flow. But it's like, bro, you gonna you're gonna get them bars either way, and the songs and the hooks is gonna be great. That's one thing I'm trying to really like like pride myself in now is my fucking hook game. Yeah, like I feel like hooks are nor traditionally the toughest for lyrical rappers. Yeah, it is. I could, yeah, like I wasn't always the best at hooks, but I noticed my last few projects, nigga, my shit been fucking crazy. Like, I'm talking about, and I ain't just here to toot my own horn, so I'm not we're here for that. that's actually exactly what you're here for. Bruh. Yeah, toot away. Bruh. Toot toot. Man, this shit get lit.
This shit get real 50 cent real Eminem esque with hooks, bro. This shit get real, like, like, bro, you niggas gotta understand what like, who the, who the who the masters of making hooks is. Like, yeah, you know what I'm saying? Like, these niggas went platinum, diamond off their hook game. That's the type of lane I'm trying to be in. People be trying to people people kind of forget that rap at one time was 80 BPM. You know what I'm saying? Not super like dense 808s and shit like that. You know what I'm saying? Like, you that shit can get back to the forefront. Nigga, I can go platinum off some shit. That sound that like that sounds like Drake produced it. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? I and that's just how I feel. Look at Drake. Nigga, Drake can rap great. Drake can rap great and still be like number three on the charts. Yeah. That's what I'm trying to be, bro. Yeah, I mean, you mentioned Eminem. I mean, you became a huge Eminem fan at like a very young age, like five or something. Yeah, I've been a fan of Eminem for a long time.
What about it? Like, what about Em specifically though? Because a lot of people like him, but I'm always interested to hear like what about Em? He's animated. Okay. Yeah, he's animated as hell. Like, of course, the the motherfucker can rhyme and he can rap. And he also his introspection, people sleep on his introspection a lot. People kind of call him like like a like a white trash struggle rapper. Like whenever he like kind of gets into his bag about his mother or his or his life or like getting bullied or some shit like that. Or Cam or whatever, yeah. Bro, the way this man could put like a comedic effect on it and rhyme the way he rhymed with it, it was just different. Like he like, I ain't, yeah, nigga's different. Eminem was always different. Like, people who really fuck with rap know Eminem different. Yeah, yeah. What's your favorite M project? The The Marshall Mathers LP. Okay, yeah. Not gonna lie. Nothing wrong with that choice. You probably think I'm in the tape deck now. I'm in the backseat of your truck with duct tape stretched out. Like, come on, dog. Like this man crazy. Incredible. Yeah, I mean, the way he, I mean, shit, speaking of villains, the way he like played himself as this like demonic fucking psychopathic. you know, him and DOOM. Yeah, yeah, DOOM, too.
Yeah. I am interested. Like, you mentioned Big L in another interview. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. No one from Atlanta. I had a New York roommate in college. That was who put me on Big L. Rest in peace. I fucking fell in love with Big L, bro. I mean, I had no idea what 139th Lenox meant until I fucking, you know, heard Big L. That's that. guy, bro. I fell in love with that shit. Like, how did you even get put on to so much of that New York hip hop? Um, my mom ex-husband, my former steppop, shout-out to fitz. Yeah, man, that nigga put me on um on big L. He was like, yo, you ever over to big L. I was getting homeschooled at the time. I had got I got kept back on some fuck shit. I had like, I was starting, like, I had tag classes and I was skipping, so then I got kept the fuck back like a dumbass. So I was like, how you have gifted classes and get kept back? Right. like, are you gifted? Right. Like, no, stupid ass nigga. But like, yeah, like he put me on Big L when I was homeschool, I was bumping that shit. I was like, bro, this nigga is crazy. He's he was crazy to me. He was crazy. Oh, yeah. When I first heard put it on, I was like, That's the first song he put me on.
Exactly. I mean, that that's one of his, you know, I guess, you know, hallmark records, and like that shit just blew my mind. I was like, who the fuck is this guy? How does he rap like this? Yeah and like just hit his flow, his voice. I mean digging into his freestyles and like all type of crazy shit. Oh, the 98 freestyle, all type of shit. Like, he got he got he got a lot of crazy, he got some other shit on the um on the bigger picture that came out after after he passed. Yeah, I got slugs with I got even he says he's good. What'd he say? Nah, that that that's not the 98 freestyle. He was like, uh he got I'm from New York and I never was a fan of the Knicks, and I'm all about expanding my chips. You mad because I was in the van with your bitch with both hands on the tits, like that type of rhyme scheme. No nigga was really rapping like that in like 97, 98, bro. Wasn't nobody doing that. Like he was very ahead of his time. Yeah. And y'all both had a person that put you on. Because I feel like the average Atlanta hip hop fan was No, bro. You say big L, and even people that like call themselves like you know, rap heads down here in Atlanta have no idea who the fuck that is.
They can't name one song by him. Yep. Which is sad, honestly. But like in New York, it's like if you're a hip hop head, like you know, you're respecting the shit out. I mean, I think he just got like a street name that like you know, a street sign, like you know, in in Harlem from him or whatever. So that that's crazy. Um do you remember the first song you ever rapped, like as a really, really young kid? Uh nah, probably let my mama tell you it's probably some hot boy shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's one of my favorite rappers of all time, too. I think it was get your Roll on, actually. Probably get your Roll on. That's what she was saying for sure. And you were like, two, bro. I was young rapping, dude. Like that was crazy. I was like, how did you even know? Like barely know how to speak and be able to rap a whole song. I was changing, I was changing my fits and all that shit. Like, like three times a day, like hats and and five gear and all that shit as a kid. Like, I was very in tune with hip hop culture at a young age. You were acting like a rapper at at that age.
Yeah, like a star. I started writing my own shit at five. Wow. Yeah, like no cap. Like, I wouldn't lie to you. Yeah, and and I mean, music was kind of a family affair, right? I mean, what roles did like your mom and your dad and like your grandpa play? My mom used to write my shit. My mom and my auntie. Yeah, yeah. They used to write my shit. Ghostwriter mom. That's crazy. I was like Yeah, did your mom have bars? Like four, four and five. And I remember I was like, nah, I'm finna write my own shit. But yeah. Yeah, my mom and them got bars. Hell yeah. My mom can sang and all that shit. My auntie can sang and all that shit. My family's very talented. My granddad owned the label in Pensacola, Florida. That's where I was born at. Like I'm from Atlanta. I moved up here when I was like a year old, six months old. But I was born in Pensacola. My granddad had owned a label out there. And um it was it was all right. Like it kind of studio? Yeah, had a studio and all that shit. Mm-hmm. And um, yeah, that shit just kind of in my family. My bad. Gasp, nigga. It's the fucking weed and the alcohol. These niggas got me drunk, y'all. We do.
We have Marco Plus drunk. We wanted the best out of Marco Plus. It's gonna be the it's gonna be the YouTube title, I think. Marco Plus gets drunk. on podcasts and spills beans on new projects. No, man. Yeah. No, so so let's you know, let's kind of rewind you know a bit, talking about getting signed to you know, cinematic. We've had uh Fabo, who's an AR with cinematic. I don't know if you know Fabo. he works with uh Big Yevo. I thought you were talking about not Fabo from like Atlanta Hills, man. I thought you was talking about Fabo. No. Big boss Fabo on Instagram, but he works with La Soldier, La Heat, uh Big Yevo, all that all the Alabama shit. Yeah, I ain't gonna lie, I got through cinematic like straight through Shipes. Yeah, yeah, like I didn't, it wasn't through like no one else. It was kind of like Yeah, so how did Shipes find you? Instagram, man. That's crazy. Shout out the internet. bro. Yeah, everything's kind of just going crazy at the time. Then Shipes had approached me with something that was pretty cool. I mean, so what's interesting is I I found out about you because you were uh supporting, I think, Grip on his tour. Shout out to Grip. Shout out to Grip. big shout out, Grip.
Yeah, so so we're close with Tig, his manager. Um, and so I actually found you through that. Yeah, I just seen Grip last night. Okay. Hell yeah. He was in the studio right before he went to Alaska, which he said was fucking crazy. Yeah, that nigga said, yeah, he told me the sun don't set over there. Yeah. For like four hours a day or something. Yeah. That's that's wild. So so was there a certain video that was there a certain video that Shipes saw, or like what what did he did he tell you like what piece of content he saw or something? Like a song or what? I think I rapped on a JID beat. Mhmm. And I think he heard that, if I'm not mistaken. But my album had kind of been making his rounds around the industry already. So it could have been either or he didn't really tell me how he found it, but he DM'd me and seeing that I had DM'd him before. Like I fuck with Shipes. Like I done been I've been on cinematic since like Joey Badass get when uh was over there. Yeah, dead ass. Like, and even like was crazy enough before I even knew that, and it was honestly before that.
I ain't gonna lie. My daddy put me on Big Crit 2010 when Crit was here with Drop. Shout out to Crit, man. Yeah, that was my shit. One of my favorite projects, bro. Yeah, that's why that's probably my favorite mixtape of all time. Yes. And it's out there. I didn't know that cinematic had anything to do with that until I was fucking with Pro Era. Yeah. Yeah, so it was kind of crazy. And I'm a big Nip fan. They did the marathon. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah, it's like it's honestly full circle as hell. So what's it like working with Shipes? Because it's crazy. Yeah. Yeah. His his animal impersonations aside. He's he's definitely a crazy dude. Um, but yeah, like what's it like working? Because I I know he's really hands-on with the music typically. So what's it like working with him? You know, I'm assuming you've been in the studio and stuff, right? He gives me enough creative control. For sure. Mm-hmm. And he, but he also jumps into where he thinks something could be better. And that's what I always respect. Because every, like every at every point in my life, couldn't nobody tell me what the fuck I was doing wrong.
You know what I'm saying? Man, One thing I'm always looking for is how to become better. You can't like for me to become better. I can't just think I'm like can't hang around with yes, man. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? Exactly. So he always, like he always tapping in with it. Like he always just helping me trying to figure out shit, trying to figure out where where a song would go. Like I do my own set list and all that shit. But like this, like this was the first time I actually had some help with it. Shipes is um, he's very hands-on with the shit, dude. It's a pretty good dude to be the first one to help you. with some shit. And we be doing shrooms and shit. There you go. Yeah. He's no stranger to uh I probably shouldn't say that. shrooms. I think he's pretty good. I think he's pretty public about the things he does. That's known. It's kosher. It's kosher. No, most definitely. Um, okay. So so, you know, making it in music has no blueprint, right? Yeah, like not at all.
You you, along with everyone else, has done whatever the fuck they can to try and like make this shit a reality for them, right? Like to turn this dream into something real. Yeah. Tell the people the story of when you, you know, went to to try and show your stuff to big boy. Do you remember that? Oh shit. Yeah. Boy, what the fuck? I did not expect this to say that. Because I think this is important for people to hear because it seemed to me, and maybe you've never thought about it this way, but it seemed like a pretty, it seemed like a pretty pivotal like point, kind of, at least like subconsciously, maybe. Bro, I did not expect this to say that. He's the Nardwuar. All right, So Pete, so Pete. Bro, I was young, dog. I was like 12. Yeah, how old? Okay, 12? I was like 12. Like, of course, I was a like, I'm from Atlanta. So I'm a young nigga. And of course I know who OutKast is, but I'm not like a super fan, like how I am at, like right now. You know what I'm saying? But I knew who Big Boy was, nigga. I know I I'd be on it all night, man. I'd be on it, and and the whole world, and and Miss Jackson and elevators and all that shit.
I know all that, but I don't really get the effect yet. So I'm like, like the nigga turned me down, of course. Like, like he's signing autographs and shit. So he's busy. He busy. What'd you ask him though? I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Where do you go? Where do you go? I was like, uh, we was at like the ATT uh at Camp in Camp Creek Marketplace. Yeah, because he's doing like a promo radio Over the East Point run or some shit, right? Like he's doing some event with V103 or something of that nature, right? Yeah. And he's posted up at this like cell phone store. Yeah. And you have the grand idea, like, hey, I'm gonna go. Nah, not even, bro. We was just walking through. Oh, you were just walking through. I was with my family. Okay. Yeah, we was like just I think we were like going to DTLR or some shit. It was some shoe store over there. And uh, I tried to rap for the motherfucker. Um he was like, no, because he was busy signing shit. And I was like, damn. Why can't rap for this nigga? Like, what make him so hard? I went and listened to OutKast. I was like, bro, these motherfuckers are amazing.
This nigga's amazing. I ain't gonna lie, big boy's one of my favorite rappers ever, bro. So was it actually because of that situation? Was it actually a pivotal moment, like Ben thinks, or did you completely just forget about that until it wasn't that pivotal? Yeah, but like getting rejected by someone like so legendary that had to like take a shot to your nah. I was just like, damn, but all right. That's it. Bro, I was fine. Regardless, like I don't need no approval from nobody. I ain't gonna lie, I ain't never need no approval from no nigga to make me think like I was like five. Like, bro, I'm dope. I ain't need if it wasn't big boy, it was gonna be somebody else. Yeah, yeah. What's crazy is that like you have to shout out to big boy, man. That's the best. Hey, I ain't gonna lie, bro. Niggas better stop underrating big boy, man. Antoine Patton ain't no joke. Shout out to Andre 3000. But that nigga big boy ain't no joke. Big Boi is So hard, yeah. Yeah, I was just I was just having a conversation about this the other day. But yeah, yeah, no, but like, you know, for me, you're so confident, yet you also just mentioned and like showed so much love to people that do show you love too. So it's like it's interesting.
Do you care about what people think or not really? No, because I'm better than everybody still. Like, I can admire everybody and still be better than these. It's an interesting paradox, though, don't you think? It's kind of interesting. Uh-uh. No, no, think about it, bro. Like, come on, bro. Not because everybody's got to learn from somebody. But some super confident people don't have the ability to flip it the other way, I feel because they're jerks. I don't know. People be self-absorbed, like they don't know how to like differentiate the two. Like, you can think you're a great guy and still understand that motherfuckers have been great. Okay, yeah. No, I think I think that's that's huge, though. Yeah, yeah. It's not as common as you're maybe making it out to be. I mean, it is bro. I ain't gonna lie, bro. It's bro, people have egos. I'm not really an ego-driven guy, I'm a fact driven guy. That's why I can factually say I'm better than motherfuckers, too. Like I'm dead ass. Like, bro, it's not even like me joking. Like, like I'd be a dead ass serious. Believe it in here. If I was to lie and actually say it like, like, I don't think I'm better than motherfuckers, I'd be sitting here lying. I think I'm better than a lot of people, and I won't even get into that list of people.
Cause that's not even what hip hop is about. No, we're here for that. Not at all. I'm not into that. Throw shit in. I ain't gonna lie. I love, I'm not into that at all. I love rappers. I love like listening to rappers. Like, motherfuckers be great, but it's a different thing when you just say that like you I'm I'm better than people. I am life. If we gave him a lie detector test. And if I had and also if I had the bag, how these niggas got the bag, it'll like, like, it'll show. You know what I'm saying? Motherfuckers got budgets through the roof, got bread through the roof to pay for all type of sounds and to do all type of crazy shit for with their albums and with their music and shit. And that's not giving me no excuses. Like, hell yeah, nigga, more fucking power to you. But if my shit next to yours, and my shit just as good, then what does that tell you? Yeah, it tells me that when you get the big budgets, it's a fucking over with rap. It's over with. It's a wrap. It's over with. Done. So you end up living with your grandparents for a while. Yeah.
What about that situation did not work for you? Nothing. No. Shout out to my grandparents. I love them, man. But it didn't really quite work. Yeah, no, but I was fucking up, bro. I was sneaking my BM in that motherfucker. I was but then then this is the time this is this is the second time I get kicked out. I'm talking about the first time I get kicked out. I don't even remember what the fuck I get kicked out for. But I I remember I moved to Florida for like two years in 2016 to 2018 from March to March. Like, yeah, like it was crazy. And then I'm I moved back to Atlanta and then I got kicked out again, type shit, because I was like sneaking my girl in there and my grandma don't play that. This is the South. Yeah, she's on that respectful shit. Yeah, Twin. She had something to say about that. I was tripping. I was tripping. I am so sorry, grandmother. I was tripping. Yeah. So, so you know, you mentioned moving to Florida back to Pensacola where you were born, right? You live with your dad there. Yeah. And I feel like your life kind of takes an interesting turn. Yeah, it was the worst. Like, talk to us, about.
not even the worst. I ain't gonna lie, bro. I be chilling. Like, like Yeah, but like what were you getting into there? I ain't gonna lie. Like, through all type of through all my points in life, I done always been kind of like, ugh, I don't like life, but not like on no say, I don't know. I don't even know how to explain it. Cause I ain't I'm not really on that no more. You know what I'm saying? But I was deaf depressed as hell for a lot, a big part of my life. You know what I'm saying? My life wasn't even that bad. I ain't gonna lie, like we did good. Like, I had Air Force Ones and Rocawear and all type of shit as a young nigga. Like, I had video all the video games. I could rap. I got girls. I just got irritated at certain shit too much. Like, bro, you're like people's brain capacity be different, you know what I'm saying? For certain shit, like mental health ain't no motherfucking joke. Like, this shit just it's just certain shit that go on for niggas. You know what I'm saying? So I was going through shit at the time. I feel like my shit just changed with age. But yeah, like, like, yeah, dog. Like, I moved out there.
I was I was fucked up when I moved out there. I was I was sad, shit was happening, shit was going crazy. I moved out there. I it got it got a little bit better, but then it got worse. And not even in terms of like bread or none of that shit. Like money wasn't a problem or none of that shit. Like, it was like like like drugs and shit. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, dog, I was on pills. That's when it got the monetary issues for sure. Cause yeah, I was on Zans, bro. I started popping Zans in probably like 2017. That goes hand in hand with monetary issues. Like, I used to pop them in high school, but it wasn't that, it wasn't that hectic. When I got grown, that shit got hella hectic. Yeah. Yeah, it was like, yeah. How did it impact the music? It was a lot darker. That's when shit got more like depressing. And I started rapping about my feelings and all that shit. Like it was more than just like, oh, I'm the best rapper. You know what I'm saying? I was like, oh, I'm fucked up. I'm sad. I just popped his hand. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, it was cool though.
I was popping a lot of shit, not just Zans, but it was lit. I ain't never do no coke though. You're more of a downer guy. Yeah, man. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Hell yeah. So, so how did Don't do drugs? It's just not an endorsement. It's not an endorsement. Don't do drugs. I'm not just not a fan of uppers. So, how did it affect like certain relationships and shit? Like, did it strain like friendships and like family and shit? For a second, it strained our relationship with my with my mama and my um and my my stepdad and the kid. Like it did, like dead ass. Like, cause I was like, I was fucking up. Like, I'm tripping. Like, chill out. Like, I ain't have to be doing what the shit I was doing. I had a good job. Like, for a nigga who dropped out of high school too, like I had to have great jobs and all that shit. Like, it was just it was just more personal shit. You know what I'm saying? People just be going through shit. I can't even explain why. They used to be going through shit. And but I got through that shit though. You know what I'm saying? I had a partner I was staying with too when I was on those.
My dog, Jesse, R.I.P. That nigga, like as soon as I moved, like we was living in the shed together, 'cause where I was recording mixtapes. I was putting on SoundCloud and shit. I put out Daydream when I was staying over there. Or right before I moved to there when I got kicked out of the crib, right? That nigga Jess, me and Jesse was bonding and all that shit. It was it was a bunch of us though. But then like after at a certain point, everybody just stopped coming around and moved all around and all that shit. Cause everybody was doped up and all that shit and had to get right and all that shit. And it was just me and Jesse. Nigga in the motherfucking shit in the studio. That nigga, like, as soon as I moved out, probably two weeks later, that nigga killed himself behind that shit. That shit was crazy. Damn. That nigga Jesse. That's my dog. That's my wife. Shout out, Jesse. R.I.P. Jess. Yeah. That's the gang. But yeah. So that's that's probably that'll definitely make you look at things a little differently. I feel like someone you're that close to, right? Like that could have been me kind of thing. Yeah, exactly. That literally could have been me. Yeah. Did that point in time like make you want to straighten your shit up or not even? Yeah.
But I ain't gonna lie, I was like two weeks sober when I found out Jesse uh killed himself. Oh, wow. And then he got popped the Xan. Oh, okay. You know what I'm saying? To deal with it. Yeah, like Bro at the end of the day, nigga, the Xan, that shit was working. Like the first, the initial Xan worked. Like that second Xan, you didn't need to pop that. Right. Like you didn't need to take that, dude. It just wasn't it just like that's when niggas start fucking up and start getting careless and start fighting people and start robbing niggas and start doing all this other crazy shit. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I feel like when you lose someone to like the lifestyle that you're I mean, because I'm assuming he was also like partaking in the, you know, I ain't gonna lie, Jesse was kind of different. Jesse was different. Jesse kind of Jesse had a problem. This is also why I don't condone, like, I don't know. Never mind. I ain't gonna say I don't condone it, but it's like I be I I I don't condone myself taking acid, right? That nigga kind of took a bad piece of acid and was like in like a mental hospital for a little second.
Oh wow. Yeah, yeah. And then like when he got out, like I didn't even know him before the shit, but like when he got out, they say he was never the same. I met him as he was fucked up. And I done seen him do more shit to basically fuck himself up. And he was never like a talker. He was never like a yeller, none of that shit He was a quiet guy, quiet as hell, or a reader, a fan of like the Warriors video game. If y'all remember that shit. Yeah, dog. We used to we had that shit downloaded on the PS4 or the PS3 1.0. And like we used to play that shit. So he was like a very calm guy, but like he had his issues, you know what I mean? Yeah. But he wasn't nothing like me. He was a white dude. Like he was chilling. He was nothing like me. He's a white dude. Nah, that dead ass though. Like he was like chilling. Like this is like in the middle of like country ass North Florida. Yeah. Yeah, bro. Like we had not, we had no type of a like in life except for depression. Yeah. So when you moved back to Atlanta, is that when you get, you know, kind of, you know, get your shit together a little bit? Or yeah.
A little bit. And I kind of like maybe slipped off a little bit. But I was still, like, I was still here. I was still like. Yeah, I mean, how you doing now? Man, we here, man. Yeah. This shit lit. Okay, for sure. This shit lit, nigga. Yeah. Nigga, This shit lit. I ain't never been better. That's amazing. I ain't never been better. Good to hear. Yeah. Do you feel like because I feel like some people can make music great music from these dark periods in their life? Do you feel like you made some great music during that dark time or not? Okay, yeah. Plus two I dropped in January 2021. I made that going through a mean breakup. Okay. Mm-hmm. The meanest breakup. Shit was wicked. Yeah. I can, yeah, I ain't gonna lie. Some of my some of my best music probably, I ain't gonna say that. Some some some very great music came out when I was going through dark times. Yeah.
I feel like you gotta have something to talk about. And it doesn't have to be bad necessarily, but you gotta have you gotta live some life. Exactly. To be able to write about life. character development is a real thing, bro. Yeah. You look amused. Yeah. I just never want to have to go through that to have to build character again. Fuck all that heartbreak, nigga. I'm trying to stay with my girlfriend I got now. Yeah. Yeah. Shout out to her. I handle heartbreak different. I be real sad, nigga. I'd be like, uh fuck, nigga. I'm finna go Papa Xan. That's right. Don't break his heart, girlfriend. Nah, she not. Hey, cut it out. That's my home girl. I love that girl. I was just giving her friendly reminder to not break your heart. I'm just looking out for you, bro. So I'll fuck with it. So at what point do you link up with like the backseat crew? Because you're rocking the backseat house merch right now. Yeah. That's hard. Backseat gang. So yeah, at what point does that whole part of your story, you know, start? Shout out smiles, man. I'm gonna start from the top, right? Yeah, I'm gonna start from the top. my same cousin who I started smoking weed with, and uh start drinking with, shout out to Leek. Shout out to Leek. he's also a rapper.
Shout out to Vamp Leek. A lot of people probably heard of him. He's a he's doing his thing. He's a he's a different type of rapper. He's uh he's he's he's one of the his name is Vamp Leek. You know, you know, like that's my nigga though. That's my dog, I swear to God. But yeah, we was like in it, we was in Little Five Points at Rag-O-Rama. A nigga walk up to me, trying to sell me acid. As everyone in Little Five Points is trying to do. It's Smiles, it's Smiles. I think I knew him. I'm like, nah, I ain't know him at the time. I ain't know him at all. No, I'm saying I think I know. Oh, yeah, yeah. I think I bought acid from him. You might have bought something from that nigga last night. Let's not even cap. Some starry night. I ain't even getting into it. Because he's the type of guy to be like, nah, man, why'd you get into get into that. So look, the nigga tried to sell me acid. I was like, nah, but maybe one day. So I'ma follow you on Instagram. We followed each other. A couple months later, I was with my girlfriend at the time, my baby mama, um, and two friends. Um we were at a party at a hotel or some shit.
Smiles was there. He was like, yo, I met you before. This ain't about acid, though. I fuck with your music. Like, oh wow. Yeah, like he said, yeah, he said, I fuck with your music. I'm like, oh, okay, that's turnt up. Yeah, so he had been peeping, I guess, like what you had been posting, type shit or something. Yeah. Because I've been I just been freestyling on the internet and all that shit that whole year and type shit. Like, yeah. So it was fucking with that. Um, we ain't nothing really come out of it at that point. Um then we got uh like I kind of fell on a little harder times, like around early 2019, and we had linked up. We were just linking up. Um, first time we really linked up the record, it was me, him, my dog Lowkey, and my dog TJ. They're all backseat. Shout out Lowkey has died, shout out TJ. Um we were recording in the car. Like, we was rapping in the car, like real nigga shit. We recorded a song called Push in the Bucket. In the car. Yeah, it's on this.
The whole setup microphone, yeah, microphone, all that shit. Wow, um, a little portable booth. Yeah, you know what I'm saying. So the backseat thing literally took a very literal. meaning. That's not even where it comes from. Not at all. Miles came up with that shit when he was in high school, he told me. Okay, That would have been funny, though. Yeah, I think bro named Harry Smith. Shout out to Harry Smith. Shout out, yeah. Thanks for the name, bro. So we um he he um that happened. And then like I had another partner who would, um, who killed himself. And, you know, Miles called me like, it was crazy. He called me like five minutes after I found out that shit happened. I'm like crying as he called me. We start clicking up after that happened more. I start pulling up on to like to low key house and shit. We start rapping more. And then like Miles said he was finna ask me if I wanted to be backseat as soon as I asked him if I could be backseat. Perfect. Wow. Yeah, so it just happened like that, summer 2019. Um, it was right at that point. It was me, it was me, Miles, Loki, TJ, and somebody else who's not in the group anymore.
Um we did a commercial, we did like an ad, a commercial for Miles' album, um, Bad Luck 2. It was about weed. There was a character named Gasman, and um, we had all these characters. It was um me. Um, this is the day I met I met Silky Southern and Elon and um probably was it anybody else? I don't think it was anybody else, but yeah, um it was lit. And also the guy who played Gasman who's not in the group anymore. But yeah, like so it was just we was um that's kind of how we all clicked up for real. Yeah, and Silk rapped. I found out Silk rapped great. That shit was crazy. He joined later on so the Elon. Elon wasn't even really all the way rapping at the time. He has he had certain songs out with with people and shit, but he wasn't he wasn't fully dropping shit yet. But he joined too, and then at that point, that's kind of like where we met Vince Rocket and Rue and Trey Ball. We met them through Silk.
Like those are Silk's High School friends. You know, so how many people are in the group? It's about nine or ten of us. Wow. Real collective. shit. It's about seven of us who, uh, make music, who rap though. What do the others do? Um, like create creative, like draw, make beats, you know what I'm saying? Do like like Rue did this. Rue did all this, Rue make beats too. Yeah. Yeah, he did the designs and all this shit. But yeah, like so how important is it for you creatively to be surrounded by like a group of creatives? Is that is that very important for you? Or are you cool being by yourself making shit? I mean, I am cool being by myself, but it's much more fun to have motherfuckers who like of course think alike but think different in a creative way. You know what I mean? Yeah. Mm-hmm. Because like, bro, my team of motherfuckers is the most creative niggas I know, like, bro. Like, don't none of us make music alike, though. At all. We all rap. Like, and not then, not even, and I ain't even talking about no lyrical shit. Because rock don't drop boom bap shit.
Rock is probably the hardest rapper of all time, though. I swear to God. Like, it, like, his subject matter, like, to his to his beat selection, like to how hard the shit be, like, Vince Rocket is crazy. Like, you know what I'm saying? Elon, this nigga, this nigga literally I I'm literally watching through my eyes, Elon becoming a great fucking rapper. You know what I'm saying? Like, this nigga's great now. Like, he's great. Low key is fucking insane. He's coming too. Smiles is the greatest rapper of all time. You know what I'm saying? It's like, I ain't gonna lie, it's a few of us that it's uh it's about it's about 20 motherfuckers tied for the greatest of all time. And me smiles and jigs and silky southern are probably are are up there. Do you guys critique each other and trying, you know what I mean? Like, are you pretty open about, like... We'll tell each other when we don't like something or we like something better than everything. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, exactly. But also, at the same time, we understand when somebody what what someone's trying to do. So we give people room to also under like feel how they feel and grow to some shit.
Yeah. Is there some of that like friendly competition going on? Hell yeah, of course. Yeah. I feel like that's always helpful. Yeah, it's always. I feel like I feel like all through the lyrical rappers, we're always trying to make something that's like, yo, let's impress them. Not even trying to be better. Let's impress them. You know what I'm saying? Like, yeah, yeah, I'm trying to impress my friends. They're my friends. Like, oh, you like this? Like, because you you're the toughest critic. You know what I'm saying? Like, you're my friend. You're gonna tell me some shit whack. Yeah. So, but like we've talked about this a few times now, like this whole group and collective dynamic, right? I mean, we had Two Nines, Jace on the podcast. Shout out Jace. Yeah. Jace is fucking legendary artist. Two Nines obviously had their, you know, heyday. Everyone kind of, you know, went their separate ways, whatever, right? What do you think it's gonna take for backseat to succeed as like a collective? And are you guys dropping music as a group? Yeah, it's a backseat album coming soon. Okay. And so what do you think it's gonna take for you guys to, you know, I guess sustain longevity? Honestly, we are we all actually fucking friends.
Like we're fucking like we're friends for real. You know what I'm saying? Like motherfuckers probably don't really be super friends when they get into this shit. But also, what like to maintain longevity, let's just fucking rap. Let's just make the song. As long as we're making the song, it's like, also, we're not we're not we're not a like we're not trying to be a fucking like a boy band, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, like we still have solo. careers. We're all individual artists. Yeah. Yeah, like, but that's the greatest thing about backseat. Like, you get all of these people who are them. You know what I'm saying? Man, It's not motherfuckers who are this. Like backseat is kind of like a potluck. You know what I mean? And that's the greatest part about it. But we do have a backseat project in the works? Yeah, it's a backseat project coming soon for sure. I need that to keep y'all together for sure. Yeah. Man, we're going crazy. Man, we and we going crazy. Just multiple artists on every song. Yeah, yeah.
Whoever? Shit like that. Exactly. You all decide. I ain't got none of them motherfuckers on my album, which is crazy. None of them? Nah. But they always on every other album. And so it so it's always so it's all good. Like motherfuckers already know the deal. Like this shit's kind of like. Are they feeling some type of way about it? Yeah. Them niggas don't get no fuck. I would. No, no, bro. We be making music. We be making music, bro. Like, it's so like, bro, it's my 11th album. Wow. Yeah. I didn't realize the discography was that deep. Yeah, bro. Them folks ain't gonna be mad if they ain't on one when it was on the past six. Right. Chilling, bro. And you probably didn't do it on purpose. It just kind of worked out that way. Yeah, yeah, it just kinda happened that way. I recorded my whole album away from them. You know what I'm saying? I didn't record it much. Was everything recorded in New York? The bulk of it, the bulk of it. Like some of it was recorded with my dog Richie. Shout out, Richie. Um What producers can we expect on the project? Turk Money. That's my dog. He produced crack music on the last shit. He produced On Go on the last shit too. Crack Music too.
Crack music, both of them. Both of 'em. Um he produced a lot of Sparkle. That's like Tur Turk Money is my favorite producer. Not gonna lie. Um Turk Money on there, Limo on there, um, Rocky's on there. Um Rocky's like a Grammy. Uh well, I don't know. I don't know if that's gonna be on there. Honestly, it's a great song, but I don't know if it's gonna be on there. Okay. I I'll be having to figure shit out. We still in this form of building this shit. But um, yeah, bro, it's it's honestly people who I've who I've I've tried to get familiar with my sound. Like, I ain't gonna lie, I'm I'm I'm trying to wait until I outsource for production that's not really home base. You know what I mean? Everybody I'm working with, I've kind of been working with for the past few projects. Which is crazy, right? You've linked up with Johnny Shipes, who can tap into pretty much any producer in the world, yeah, at one click of a fucking text, one phone call, whatever you want to do. And it's it's cool to me that like, nah, it's gang gang shit. Like all these dudes that have been building this sound with me, yeah, that you stayed true to that, man.
Cause it's like, dude, like I'm trying to make, I gotta get my own sound before I feel like I can outsource and add somebody into my sound. Mm-hmm. You know what I'm saying? And my dogs, like the people I really like fuck with who produce my shit for me, like these niggas know what the fuck I'm trying to do, like in their respective manners. Like they don't produce like at all, but I have these sounds to where people understand, like, yo, Marco Plus is very, very um versatile. He can do whatever the fuck he wants. So I'm gonna just make sure my palate is open for whatever the fuck he needs. Like, niggas know what it is, and that's why I fuck with them. Turk Money and Limo, that's why I fuck with them specifically. Yeah, no cap. Shout out to Turk Money and Limo. Shout out them. They're probably the best producers on the planet. That's dope. But it's just interesting because most people get a deal, right? They start working with a label, they start working with the new management team, whatever. And the first thing that comes is let me set you up with all these new producers. Let me set you up with all these new writers, these new features.
That's a part of motherfuckers not having that creative control, though. You know what I'm saying? Ship's workshop. Motherfuckers don't have a, and they also don't have an identity. Like the South I said to say was good because I made it good. Because I picked, I picked the people who I wanted to make it sound great. Like these motherfuckers made it sound great, but that's because I had to, I had to use my ears. You know what I'm saying? Some motherfuckers don't got an ear for that. Some artists don't executive produce their own projects. Some artists don't executive produce their own shit. I'm really into my own music. Like I have to sit in the session and all that shit. Like for mixing. You know what I mean? Like, yeah, I'm different. I'm not even finna play those type of games. Yeah. No, I always find that interesting. You know, Henry's a mixed engineer, and like there are some artists that like have that inclination to want to be like in the mixing sessions. I know I gotta be, dude. I gotta be. It's just because, bro, like I know how I want my shit to sound, like where I want the beat to drop at, where I want certain shit to cut at, or where I want lo-fi at, where I want the screws to be at, all that shit. Of course. I'm one of those guys, like I'll be there and sit right next to you, like, yo, yeah, let's get this shit done.
For me, it's easy going for me though, it's the difference between, you know, like those to me are kind of like almost more production decisions. You know what I mean? I think the artists, most artists care more, you like about where a beat drop's gonna go than you know how much I'm boosting at 3k hertz or something like that. You know what I mean? Exactly. I ain't gonna lie. My dog Trigg, put me on some shit, man. Shout out Trigg from cinematic, man. Yeah, Trigg's hard, bro. I be sitting like so that he mix the project. Yeah, he's mixing the project. Yeah, Hell yeah. I just be sitting there just looking at everything he's doing, and he really teaches me a lot. Like, I don't even think he knowing that I'm soaking a lot of this shit up for when I get my own shit and figure this shit out. Like, I mean, you won't need his ass anymore. Oh no, hell no. I ain't gonna lie, I ain't never mastering my shit. Yeah, that shit, Trick still got that. I ain't never mastering my shit. I just want to be able to record this shit and make it sound good so I can listen to it in the car. At least get it to a listenable level, right? Yeah, yeah. But when it comes down to fully mixing the master and that shit, I'm gonna leave that to Trick and Richie, they can have that.
That's dope. Yeah. That's why artists need to have like sessions with their engineer or producer, whoever it is, that are like production sessions where they actually make the choices of like where the screws are, right? Where you're doing that stuff. Had the engineer actually be down to like learn your music and fuck with it. Yeah. And also you be down to learn and fuck with how your engineer works. Because a lot of people don't be down to do that. You know what I'm saying? They be used to stand sticking in one way, like, nah, bro. You gotta see how these motherfuckers work. Mm-hmm. Like, that's how Yeah. No, that's dope. So, you know, you mentioned Rockin' heavy with JID. Shout out to J.I.D. He also was another reason that I got reminded of how dope you were because he like co-signed you on some interview or something recently. Uh or I say recently, you know, over the last few months. Yeah. How important is a cosign though to you? Do you give a fuck? You you got this very much, I don't give a fuck attitude, But like, do you, I hear a lot. okay? You do put uh like some weight on on cosigns like that from people that you respect. Yeah, yeah.
Uh I I don't you know what the problem is though, I don't really like I don't really give myself a chance to enjoy it I noticed. Like a couple weeks ago. Yeah. I don't really give my chance to, I don't really give myself a chance to enjoy the shit. But yeah, I definitely appreciate that shit heavy. Like, because niggas don't gotta do that, bro. Not at all. Niggas don't gotta do that at all. And it's helpful. Exactly. It's Objectively helpful. It's helpful as hell, bro. It's helpful as hell. You know, it's so crazy. It reminded me to reach out to you to be honest, I've been having motherfuckers walk up to me all the time talking about, oh yeah, Jit posted you. I messed with you. Yeah. Like, yeah, that shit's crazy, man. Shout out to Jaddy. Who's who's the ultimate co-sign for you? If you could have one person co-sign you right now, who would it be? Beyonce. Beyonce. Beyonce. He wants that, he wants that bae cosign right now. Need that Beyonce. Okay. That holds a lot of weight. For sure. She's good, bro. She say your name, bro. She put your name on her page. All she gotta do is put Marco Plus on her on her on her website.
Bro, you know how many chicks check out her website, bro? They gonna search on what the hell is Marco Plus. Right. They gonna find out and they gonna be like, oh, this is hard. It's lit. So, shout out to Beyonce. Shout out to Jay-Z. Yeah, I'm a big HOV fan. Yeah. What's your favorite HOV project? Probably in my lifetime, volume two. Okay. Or volume one. Those are like underrated ones. You think so? Kind of. Everyone always says blueprint or black album or yeah, I guess. I mean, I hear volume one and volume two. Okay. Feel like I yeah, people do be saying blueprint. Yeah, I'm a I'm a I'm a volume one and volume two type of guy, bro. So I saw this other interview with you and a few of the homies from backseat. Mm-hmm. And I can't remember who it was that said, like, I mean, shit, we're not all that similar. I mean, like, I don't eat ass. Was was he referring?
