Caleb Collossus on Netflix's Rhythm & Flow, Fascination with Film, and More

In this episode of the One More Time Podcast, Caleb Colossus talks about competing on Netflix's Rhythm and Flow, his fascination with film, love for Atlanta sports, and more! Caleb Colossus is a rapper from the eastside of Atlanta. After playing collegiate sports, he ended up back in the A and like many recent grads, was just trying to figure out what to do with his life. One day, he woke up to 5+ DMs from friends telling him to submit to be on this upcoming Netflix music competition. He rapped his way through to the top 4 of the competition. Whereas the show was an undeniable launch pad for his career, he knows that this is just the beginning and is ready to kick things into the next gear. 2021 was a bit light for him, but he promised that this year will be full of new releases. His full length project set to drop this year was recorded and mixed by H3NRY and features production from him as well.

I think we take for granted acting. So many times we watch movies and we forget that people are acting. Like it's nuts. You feel like you're stepping into a world and you're just watching it, but you don't consciously remember. Like, these people are acting like The One More Time Music Podcast. Genuine conversations with genuine people about music. Hosted by Henry with a three and playback Ben. We're from being more coop to pants off, some more distant is so Pioneer one more time. Kanye one more time. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back for another episode of the One More Time Podcast. I'm your host, Playback Ben, here with my co-host. Henry with a three because Henry with an E was already taken. Henry, who do we have on the podcast today, my friend? Welcoming in on the 43rd episode of the One More Time podcast, straight out of Inglewood, California, winner of Rhythm and Flow on Netflix. It's D Smoke! Henry, Henry. D D couldn't make it. We couldn't get D?

0:57

No. Oh shit. Who is this? That's so fake, bro. We had to do it to you. I was like, had to wait weeks and fucking The roast is a is a is a very special, special part of it. It's really the only reason we do this whole podcast. We can stop every episode after this. In all seriousness, folks, we do have one of the contestants on rhythm and flow. Yes. Henry threw a little bit of shade. That's messed up. Sorry. I think it was fourth place, but we'll get into that. Uh Mr. Caleb Colossus. Caleb Colossus. Yes. Lord Lost. Nice. Don't let me get you off on the wrong foot here. I'm so sorry. Caleb, how you doing, man? I'm doing great. Fantastic. Good to hear. Awesome. So I was, you know, thinking about you the other day because I was watching Genius. You know, the Kanye documentary. I'm assuming you Of course I was. Yeah. Big Kanye fan. Big Kanye fan. Huge Kanye fan, right? Big Kanye fan. Yeah. Like, what about Kanye? You know, do you love so much?

1:54

Um, well, I would say, like, everything that I've loved at some point, there's been like a soul moment while why why I love it. And my I remember when I had MySpace. Um, Shout out. I had MySpace. I was looking for music, and I used to not like Kanye for many of the reasons why everybody else does. when I was like young, and it's because of what everybody told me, adults. You shouldn't like Kanye. He's he's cocky, he's this and that. And I remember my brother, my brother, I would you know attribute a lot to you know, kind of put putting me on music. I remember he used to always like Kanye. This was like around the time of uh graduation. Yeah. And obviously I had heard Kanye songs before. Yeah. Um I remember just it was a day I was just looking on MySpace, looking through uh songs to put on my profile. And I just went on a deep dive into Kanye. I was like one of the last people I had was like, all right, I might as well just look.

2:53

And on a spot, I just I just fell in love with. I don't remember specifically, I know it was something off a graduation, and luckily this was like right before um 808s dropped. I always liked the song like Jesus Walks, and I love the mainstream ones, but I never did like a deep dive up until that point. Um did you also deep dive in the production? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I obviously like I, you know, it just probably within like 07, 08, right before 808s dropped, I I became a hater and a super fan. Like it was a complete 180. And um ever since, man, just creatively, that's always been like a my first one of my first major, you know, music influences. So yeah, I feel like for me, people still don't know what he produced. Yeah, you know what I mean? Like the average, even Kanye fan still, and that's why I'm excited to to you know see where the documentary goes because they I mean I well, I guess they already kind of got through a lot of the production stuff, right? And kind of, you know, I guess pinning him as this you know producer that wanted to be a rapper, but like you know, chill, stay in your corner or whatever.

4:00

But that that was what really opened my eyes to Kanye was that the songs that he made, he's a producer first, yeah. So but just so many, man. Yeah, so many hits, not just for himself, no, either. I thought, yeah, it's nuts. I was actually having that conversation with one of my homies uh last week because we were like just the random, you know, friend debate was like, yo, who's your top five producers? And it was like uh, yo, you gotta show people sometimes, like, you know, he produces or, you know, so and so did because it's other producers too that I'm like, oh, I didn't even realize that they produce it. And I to me, I obviously I make music on my own, but I'm more blown away by producers because I don't produce. Like I hear other rappers, and you know, you're like, yeah, this is good, but when it's something you can't do, like or you don't do is I'm I'm more impressed by somebody that can not only do what I do rap and producing is just so slept on, and I feel like that's that's a whole area of music that is just I I feel like don't even doesn't get the credit it fully deserves. He's literally there from it being absolutely nothing to the idea being born all the way to just the whole into the finished product he's involved, which most people are not that involved.

5:13

So no, and I just love the like old school nature of it, right? I mean, this was only in like the 90s, early 2000s, or whatever, you know, them showing this footage, but like walking into record label offices with the CD and just trying, you know, and then even the studio footage. I thought that was so like I think the holy shit, it was so analog, you know what I mean? I think the coolest thing to me about it was just um you you obviously you hear these stories, but it's like you're always imagining these stories, you know, for yourself, and you don't always know how true they are. And then when you get to see it firsthand, and I think the thing that I was most blown away about it was um that his homie had the like foresight to like film him. Oh the whole time. he took the biggest leap of faith, man. That's crazy. What was that guy's name again? Cootie? Cootie, yeah. It's like I saw the meme like everyone needs a cootie. Oh, for real. it's it's and it's the moments, it's not like he just caught, like, you know, some some intimate moments, like he's catching major, you know, to even film when you're going into record office, and that's one of the biggest songs, kind of. everybody knows that you know, attributes that song to, you know, Kanye's career.

6:20

No, it all falls down, yeah. Yeah, and just even filming it, even filming him like um in the studio when they were doing like the Jesus walks, and he was playing for like Scarface. I just I just uh I top to bottom, I thought it was nuts. I mean, you know, you get to see I think the coolest thing to me was um you get to see like you you're living in the the past, but you know what happens in the future, but it feels like you're living it in the moment, watching it unfold Pharrell, like before before Pharrell's even Pharrell, like he's still in the Neptunes, you see Beyonce in the background, yeah. Before she's even married to Jay-Z. So I thought that was the coolest part was like that nostalgia factor, plus knowing, you know, you know what you know now. Um, I thought that was super dope about it, you know, what does it encourage you to like start filming everything? You know, for you. Um because if someone wasn't filming everything, we would not be able to witness this come up. I mean, um uh I yeah, to an extent, I I think I definitely want to start getting some major, you know, milestones more. I'm be sure to, you know, film stuff more.

7:23

But I just I I thought of anything, it was my takeaway was just inspiring to see like you know, kind of similar, um, I feel like in a sense, similar spot, like like I'm in right now, where it's like on the cusp. Yeah. So I thought that was, you know, definitely inspiring and like motivating. Did he inspire you to start rapping though? Like was that when you started to no no i'm not gonna give him that much credit. He doesn't mean it yet. Let's be real. But like I always um I oh I genuinely always love music. Um I think the first album my brother had, it was like a burnt disc. It was uh speaker box. So it was like and obviously being from Atlanta, I just you know, I would hear stuff on a bus, you know, uh tip, you know, outcast, you know, Jeezy, you know, all across the board, uh 50 Cent, Eminem, um Hove. You know, just and I I was uh I was that kid that was like would skip between like cartoons and and sports center and then go to like MTV jams. So it was like I was I was always watching TV and stuff, so it was just really blossom my full love for music, I would say.

8:29

So did you start making music in high school or like when did it um so I was that I was always that kid that uh elementary school, middle school, when they were like make you write poems or something, my shit would always be kind of fine. You go in. teachers would be like, like This is kind of good. Like, you know, granted, it's like Mrs. Johnson's, like this right It was it was always like wow, the rhyme. Like, I how did you like? And it was kind of like a unknown thing where I was I would that would be the thing that I would be excited to do is like poems and stuff like that. And then I think high school, I think the moment that I really was like, all right, I need to figure something out. Do you remember when they had the Facebook notes? Like it was a big thing that like there was like Facebook had this thing where they had the notes. Um it would have notes, and you just fucking type a note. And I remember it was like a phase in high school. I was thinking I think I was in ninth grade, and people would do like poems or something on there. And I did mine like a verse, but it was like typed a note.

9:29

So you just I guess had to read it and imagine it. And I remember like it kind of, I'm not gonna say traction like it went viral, but it was like it got like 12, it got like 12 likes and like some comments. So it was like this dude was going nuts on 12 like notes. But it was like something like that, where and then you know, one of my friends at the time, um, he had just started producing, and I think he like stumbled on it, was like, yo, we should like start working on music. And it just like, yo, I saw that note, yeah. Shit needs to get it. So if I record it, log into Facebook that day, who who knows what's crazy. Yeah, so you're shout out Facebook. You're from the east side, right? From the east side. I was born in Decatur. Used to live in Stone Mountain, the other side of Stone Mountain. Yeah, not this side. This side, not this side of Stone Mountain, oh, not this And then I, you know, I moved uh middle school to this side, yeah. And yeah, I mean, you even have a song that's called ATL. ATL. Yeah, so I mean, obviously, you love the city. Always, always repping Atlanta.

10:27

You're a huge Atlanta sports guy, too, right? Yeah, so uh I think the timing of this is great because technically now with the Omaretta, the rapper. Yeah, am I really from Atlanta? I don't know. I don't know. Since Decatur and Stone Mountain is technically not Atlanta, I'll just I don't know if I can be in Atlanta. I saw like a political ad. That was like someone for judge or some superior court judge, and it was like Omeretta's going crazy. That song was like layered on top of that. So I don't know if technically that's of Atlanta. That song aside. That song aside. Obviously, huge Atlanta sports guy. Big big Atlanta sports guy. How you feeling about the the you know status of you know where our sports are at? We're back, right? I think this is the most excited. Um I've been with Atlanta sports. Um, I say this all the time. Well, well, I'm not gonna say all the time, but recently, like the Hawks are probably I've been an Atlanta sports fan my entire life. Falcons, my Falcons are like my baby, like my firstborn, just the way he says my Falcons.

11:30

Yeah, Falcons are my firstborn, but like my the this current Hawks team is my favorite Atlanta team that we've had. Cool. Even even more so than like the the like Dikembe days. Oh, yeah, yeah, for sure. I guess you were like yeah, one year old. I was I was I was a young man. I, I lived in, I'm dating myself, Jason Terry, like, okay, yeah, days, but like this is my favorite, even including like the Falcons Super Bowl run, is I just this Hawks team, I don't know what it is. Feels good. Yes, yeah, you've been going to a bunch of games? Yeah, I go. I I try to, I've probably gone to like four or five this year. Okay, um, he's also accidentally going viral on TikTok for sports posts. Yeah, I don't even think I saw that. Dude, my my TikToks going up for for sports, yeah. Not for being so you might have a future in like commentating or what? I'm a I'm I'm definitely gonna be that rapper that that transitions that can do both. Yeah, for sure. Because I I feel like the thing that I don't like, I'm not gonna say no names at all, but throw shade. We need to be a little bit more.

12:30

I feel like a lot of the I feel like a lot of Atlanta, there's a lot of Atlanta artists that you know go to the games and they're like the face of you know, whatever, but I don't know if they really be watching. Like I really they're there for the clout. Yeah, I'm an Atlanta, like, when I'd sit in the nosebleeds, I don't know not at all. But but I don't miss, I don't, I don't miss, I watch every single Hawks game, I watch every single Falcons game. I'm locked in, I'm I'm caring. I don't just come when they're playing the Lakers, okay, and when they're playing the Suns, and when they're playing, you know, the big teams, I go to, you know, I I watch every single game. See throwing shade at the Migos right now because they're pretty big in the hot seat. I'm not I'm not saying that. Uh, I'm not trying to, I think I'm always trying to get the smoke out of it. I'll just say, I'll I'll say Quavo's pretty he's probably a fan. He's pretty solid, yeah. What about uh United? They got the home opener on Sunday.

13:27

So my my brother's a a diehard united. So I've caught you at a game before I did, I You ran into it. Yeah. Um that's funny. I've gone to I went to I think I went to a couple um last year. Um and then obviously we had you know COVID and everything, but the years before I was definitely up in there for sure. They're fun. Yeah, but I mean they're definitely fun. Yeah, I mean he mentioned you know, my Falcons. That's I mean football has a special place. Yeah, yeah. It's like the tiers is you know, Falcons, Hawks, Braves, United. Yeah, yeah. But I still like, you know, if any of them win, I'm gonna, I'm I'm I'm gonna care. You know, I I started, you know, I like the Braves, obviously, you know, I I catch as many as I can games, but it's not they're not the same tiers, the Falcons and Hawks, but I'm still. Yeah. I mean, you're not doing a win. Yeah. Like, you're actually not Yeah, I mean you're not doing when they win. Yeah, like you're actually not missing a game when it comes to like the game. Oh, yeah, yeah. Fuck is in a while. I don't miss games. Yeah, I don't miss them. Like I gotta see it. You're not doing any shows if I got the schedule. I got my schedule.

14:24

This is a lot for the Hawks. They play like basketball. 100. Oh, for sure. Like, I'll do what I gotta do, you know, get my gym workout, you know, eat, and it's playing. Yeah. Yeah. Cause I mean, you go to college to play football, right? Yep. Presbyterian, shout out Presby. Shout out. That's that's in South Carolina, right? South Carolina. Yeah, okay. Yep, yep. So is that what they call it? Presby Presby, yeah. Yeah, I had a friend that went to Presby. Yeah, I had a friend that played tennis there. Um, so you know, we talked about those with a couple other guests. I'm always interested to hear this, you know, technically athletes. Yeah. That turn into the artists. Yeah, like music and sports, you know, what kind of you know, similarities do you think you draw from from those worlds? Um, I think I'm I'm I'm an extreme, I'm extremely competitive. Um I've always been really compared competitive. Um football, beer pong, pick up basketball, you know, Uno. It doesn't matter. I'm I'm super I'm that guy that's I'm annoyingly competitive.

15:24

Um and I think that just it just translates into music. Um bowling, by the way. We have to say Bowling. You two up. I don't want no smoking bowling. Y'all don't want any fucking smoking bowling. This is gonna be a matchup. And then y'all went to bowl more too. Like, yeah, that's my like that's my that's like my home court. Oh man. His uh jerseys up on the his bowling jerseys up on the wall. I know I know it's blue, 11 ball with the divots, like it's it's it's over. It's over. Like, with the scratches. Bro, can't wait. Which one. We're we're definitely going. We could definitely run it. Yeah, but yeah, so like the competitive nature of sports, yeah, kind of plays into how you approach it. And I would like you, I would definitely say competitive nature and just like overall work ethic. I think when you play any kind of college sport, when you get to that point of playing college sports, you have to have some kind of work ethic, you know, to maintain that level or you know, even make it to that level. Yeah. And um I think just kind of the coaches I had in college, coaches I had in high school, I was just always, you know, it just you know motivated me. So making that transition into life or anything out of it.

16:28

Because you always hear the cliche of well, uh college uh sports will teach you a lot about life and blah blah blah. But it's like it really does. Like I've learned I learned so much um alone just from when I those two years that I played at at PC about life, met I mean some of my best friends, you know, which is crazy. Just the pipeline of going to that school, you know, both my managers, my producer, you know, one of my main producers, his manager, like we all went to the same school, which is nuts to think about. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say, linebacker? Who me? Yeah, fuck no. Uh but he's built he's built like a linebacker. So I used to be I've I've I've gained weight, I played cornerback. Oh, okay. I was I was slimmer. I've this is this is the the grown man weight. Okay, okay. So uh linebacker, man. I'm trying to I'm trying to watch my figure, man. So so other than sports, you know, huge movie buff.

17:28

Big movie buff. I mean, movies have have like found their way into your concepts for songs and your music side of things. Oh, I mean, just speak shortly on the upcoming project. I mean, talking about movies, yeah. Yeah, I mean, if you feel comfortable. No, no, no, for sure. Yeah, let's um that's the that's the theme of this project is is as movies and film. Um I think um, and to an extent, it's not it's not in a I think in a in a sense of I um I had a phase probably during college where I just really I really got into movies, really gonna film, you know, who won this award and you know what actor, blah, blah, blah, whatever. And so you were like watching the Oscars. I was oh yeah, I was watching, I was, I was watching. I do something where every time the Oscars come out, I try to watch all the movies before before I damn. Yeah. So I don't have I could be like kind of unbiased, Yeah, I'm biased, and I could just really like have an open, open mind about stuff. Yeah, cast your vote like authentically.

18:28

I try to do the same thing, same thing with the Grammys. Like, I want to like listen to okay, what best album of the year. Like, I want to really do it. But but back to movies, um, yeah, this project, I um it kind of happened sort of unconsciously. I I think I did one song and I like named it after movie, and then the next one, it had like the theme of a movie, and I was like, you know what? I'm onto something here. We might have found something. So, and then it just got up and running. I was just kind of like, yo, I wanna each song. I'm not rapping about a movie, but it's inspired, you know, tie you know, might take the titles. I don't know. Every song is named after every song. Straight up movie. But Henry's leaking the album after this episode. Exactly. like he doesn't didn't fucking work on it. Yeah, but um, yeah, it's it's I'm super excited about it. I think this is like my this is my opus baby.

19:29

This is my opus, my opus so far. Yeah. I think this is like the this is the start. This is the start of something, something great. I think I will look back on this. Yeah, I mean, what's it about film that that you're drawn to so much? You know what I mean? Like that creative medium. Like we've had some people on here that love like painting and like art, like that type of art. I do too. Yeah, okay, but um, that's like, you know, what about film specifically? Do you think you know you're kind of drawn to? Um I would just say, because that's the closest representation of life that we really honestly have is movies. Like, yeah. If you really think about it, I think you can um, you know, I think acting, we we I think we take for granted acting. So many times we watch movies and we forget that people are acting. Like it's nuts. You feel like you're stepping into a world and you're just watching it, but you don't consciously remember like these people are acting like this person doesn't genuinely hate this person. He didn't really kill him in real life, but you're you mentally see it. That's why you see when you know people um I think I saw like euphoria. Somebody was uh one of the actors like posted their DMs and they're like uh one of the girls is like sleeping with one girl's friends, and they're like, you better not fucking you better like tell your friend what you're doing.

20:38

And like this is not really the person they're acting, like they're not really doing it. But it's like people get so like you get so lost in um in a movie and in and shows that it almost does feel real. You forget that these people, this these scripts somebody wrote, um, somebody's acting and and taking on a character role. So I think that's what you know is always drawing me to it. And um I just fuck, I just like movies. Movies are just, you know, I think it just takes. I think some of the most creative people are like people that write movies and direct movies. Um, I think, you know, that's the that's the self for me, is just the the the thought process, what it takes to, you know, come up with movies and then you know, adding a sound and score and so much that goes into it. And I think even me just you know, being on a show years ago, like it it I think knowing what how much it took to get into a production of a a a show, I'm like let alone. I can't even imagine what it's like to do a movie, and especially when it's like a high budget movie, you know.

21:42

So it's that's uh I've always I just I always always had that draw to it. It's that feeling of wonder. It's that like, yeah no. No, I mean I do catch myself being like, holy fuck, like they're just acting this out like it's nuts. Like you, yeah, this is so real. No, but fucking euphoria has me hooked, man. Oh, yeah, it's just great. but Yeah, it's great. Really? It's absurd, right? so watch it It's so good. You have to watch it. Dude, my wife will just like pop in. She like she didn't start it with me, so now she just kind of like pops in like if I'm watching it, whatever. And she's literally just like will pop in and be like, how the fuck are they making this play look like it's like a 100 million dollar budget? Like it's just a high school play. It's so fantastical sometimes. You're like, all right, but it's nah, I think it's amazing. It is a fucking, it's phenomenal. It's great, man. okay yo it's a that's a easy sell it's a good one. Both of y'all like it. That's enough. Unmatched. I guess you can show it. Yeah, no, it's it's incredible.

22:38

So, you know, after actually, I wanted to ask this. What's your Mount Rushmore of movies? Do you have kind of like that's a great question? I would go. Let me see if I could go off the top of this. Mount Rushmore. So I mean I got four. Fuck. Yeah, I've never heard it worded like that. your Mount Rushmore. Yeah, I'ma go. Dark Knight. That's that's Dark Knight. So good. I'm gonna go watch that later. Oh, this is tough. Dark Knight. Probably the best superhero movie. Hands down. Dark Knight, I'll go Django. I love Django. Oh, Dark Knight, Django. I wanna go. This is like a split because I don't want to do too many, like, no, I'll I'll do Interstellar Inception. Okay. That's like a tie. And then I'll go silence of the Lambs. Damn, classic. Those are great.

23:34

Yeah. Oh, he's he's No, he's tapped in. No, 100%. I mean, yeah, when I was, you know, talking with people that were close to you, like they were seriously saying about the Oscars. They were like, this dude's like the Oscars is like, he'll know everyone that's nominated for every fucking award. it's Best supporting actress. it's like What the fuck? Nah. How do you know who's on that? No, it's crazy too because like I if you if this was like a couple years ago, like I didn't know. It just it turned into like a I remember I had a ex in college, and I we used to always I'm really like indecisive with like picking like a movie or show to watch. Try and get me and my wife to pick a movie. It's like a fucking act It would end up being like an hour, and I would end up not even fucking watching a movie because it was like it takes so long to pick. But I remember it was like that's me, bro. one of the best things that came from that was like I was like, okay, we're gonna go through lists of like best movies, and we're just gonna watch them. And it just turned into like a like a thing, and I was like, okay, and I'm really getting into them.

24:35

Cause I always liked movies, you know. You know, my dad used to take me to movies and stuff, but that shit just made me like. Because you're running through the classics. Yeah, I'm like running through the classic. I'm like, there's some good ass movies I haven't seen, or a lot of people have not seen. I would like to tell people to watch stuff and they're like, I've never even heard of that. And then I just really just, I just kind of kind of, I'm not gonna say obsessed, but I just really just got into it. Same as music or any anything else. And you know, had a lot of time on my hands when I stopped playing um football in college, and I was like, yo, I don't got nothing to do today. I'm fucking watching. Grab some popcorn. Right, I'm gonna watch a movie. Call it a day. I'm good. Yeah, but so when you did, you know, walk away from you know, Presbyterian, you ended up switching schools and you had more time on your hands, right? Did you start diving into music though? That was that when it got serious as far as like I played uh um I played one more year at West Georgia. Okay. This was not, and I I think the whole process of like me transferring and you know how it played out, I just like I felt that year, I just like lost passion for it. Um and I knew I I I just started obviously yeah, I started getting more into my writing.

25:38

I wasn't really recording heavy at that time because I didn't, I'm in college, I didn't have access to a studio or you know, people producing or really money to record. Yeah. Um, but I was always writing, and I was like, you know, I just want more time on my hands. Um because I that's I I think I got to that cross roads where I was like, I'm not going to fucking NFL. And and um, and I I knew like music was always a thing. I at the time I was doing kind of similar to what I'm doing now. Like I was posting freestyles, it was like get traction, get a lot of love, and I was just like, yo, I need to really, really like pursue this and really start really recording and really putting time into it. And um, I would just I would, you know, get my classwork stuff done. I'd be up super late, nothing's changed. I'm still up super late, and i was just writing, and then here we are. Yeah, so you yeah, yeah, you kind of transition into like a rap lead if you will I mean because you like love rapping I love it like you love it you love like the it seems at least from you know the outside looking in like you love like the art form of rap rap I love it maybe barred up yeah absolutely love it um and I I just think that's uh um yeah I I I genuinely say like I really I really do love rap um I think even before I started rapping I loved rap yeah I loved you know so many artists that and that inspired me along the way um even when I was like not recording even when I was just getting into music that really you know just made me fall in love with it from an art form. Yeah even if I wasn't making music I feel like I would be in hip hop in some you know in in in some way shape or form and um yeah it's just it's just obviously luckily have some kind of rap ability um and you're like wait I wrote dope ass poems in middle school wait a minute he was looking back at his Facebook notes like damn that shit was heat it was that's actually kind of straight eight right there need to see the light of day that I'm that kid that has like I had still have all the old journal notebooks and shit.

27:42

I'm gonna save those I'm gonna I'm definitely gonna save them yeah put them up in a more so you know you end up graduating and then some time passes I guess yeah how does the whole process of like finding out about the opportunity to be on you know rhythm and flow and like you know walk us through kind of that whole process from even hearing about it too really crazy. Um, you always think uh like these super cool stories, like you run into somebody. Like, mine's was, like, the least like, like I was like it like I was um so maybe lie and make it a cool story. It's actually I think it's actually kind of cool that it's not cool. Like I I remember I just um at the time um I graduated, you know, I was going through that, you know, the post-grad like depression for sure. I was depressed. What am I doing? Oh, I have to pay my own like depressed as hell. Like I had moved back home. I was in my a lot of my friends were like a year um a year younger than me, so I was like back. I was like back home.

28:41

I was dolo, they were still in college, everybody was still living a good time. Um damn, that's hard. Yeah, and you know, someone had a couple other good friends that they were like a couple of them were like in the league, so they were off in their city. So I was really like by myself. And um I had a like a lot of I had like interviews and stuff, and it was just like I went through that phase of like trying to pretend like I wanted to do jobs, like it was the worst of really like going to interviews, and I was like, I don't want this job. Yeah, what's it? Anyway, so why do you want this job? Man, I don't. So there was a lot of like it was like a little PR and marketing. I remember there was one job that I did want, and I had like I went through like a I was like on the second or third interview. I almost got a job at Turner for Cartoon Network, like marketing. Like, oh, I was on a phone interview and I was like, I killed it, I'm gonna get this. And I didn't end up getting it. Oh man. Um, obviously blessing in disguise. Yeah, true.

29:36

And then this was like a time, I probably applied like 60, like so many places. Um and I remember at this time, like you said, the post-college depression. Yeah, um, I had uh, I think I had two songs out at the point and a music video, but luckily, like, you know, I had people from college that like heard my music while I was in college. And I think chance, chance to rapper, I think they posted like he like posted like a note from his phone. It was like, hey, this new show, blah, blah, blah's coming out. Um, like apply, like link and bio thing. And I remember it was one day I just had a whole, like, I'm not gonna say a whole bunch, but it was like five people like send it to me That's a lot. In the DM. And I wasn't on Instagram that day or whatever. I was like, what and I went and checked, and everybody was sending me the same thing. So, you know, you gotta think of my mindset at the time. Like, I'm applying for jobs, I'm not getting them.

30:34

I'm like, I'm not about to do, like, what's the point of me even? They're not gonna find me. Like, and oh, I mean, you were in a depressed yeah, I'm like, I'm not like no it's Genuinely, no point of me doing this. Yeah, but I was like, yeah, whatever. And it was like one of those really like minimalist websites where it was like, is this even real? Like, I can only imagine with the little like so scary. Like, type your email in, yeah, link to music, yeah, uh social handle or whatever. And I was like, this is fucking dumb. And I remember I submitted it and I just forgot about it. Like I didn't, yeah, whatever. And I was driving. I remember I was working at the stadium at the time, and I was driving on the way to work. I was on I20, I remember shit, like the back of my hand. Um, I was driving on the way to the thing, and I was getting, I was getting a call from like a random number, you know, didn't even know the zip code or whatever. Chance the rapper. I was like, it wasn't chance. Um and I happened to pick up and it was like a producer.

31:34

They're like, yo, Caleb, we want to interview you, blah, blah, blah. Let me give you a date and time, whatever. Oh shit. I was like, oh shit. And you know, yeah, he went to work, like skipping. Yeah, I went to work and I was like, I'm like, yeah. I'm not here for long, fuckers. I'm back, bitches. And then it was still like uh it was still like a you know, don't hear nothing again for like two weeks. And I set up a call and they like interview me. They're like, and it was crazy how it works. They're like, how's tell me your life story? Yeah, like, what? Like I was really just having to give my life story of like where I was at currently in my life, and that's like what we're doing now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And me and the just why he's doing so well. And me and the um, yeah, me and the producer just kind of hit it. I ended up talking, like, I ended up just like ranting for like an hour. And like we just kind of hit it off, and I kind of just had a you know feeling, and then ball just started getting rolling, and you know, I had to try out and try out and all that, and then just yeah. So what was it?

32:32

So so then after that, like kind of meeting with the producer. Is that when you ended up in a barber shop with Killer Mike? Yeah, so yeah, literally, I'm trying to like see how we go. So how they sold it to me, phone call on I-20. How they sold it to me was crazy. Like, I knew I was gonna have a audition. Um, they're like, yo, pick some fits out, send us a pictures, um, and I sent it in. Um and what happened? And I remember they were like, okay, you're so your audition, like, let's say it was Saturday. They were like, your audition is Saturday. We want um you to come in Friday. Uh we wanna like, I forgot how to explain it, but they were like, Yeah, we just want to like talk and like get to know you or something like that. And we're so they downplayed the fucking. Yeah, they were like, where you're fit. And I was like, all right. Like, like okay, I didn't know what I was going into. And I I come in and it's me, it's like Troy, and it's like one other person, and they're like, we're like getting our makeup done. They're like, we're gonna get a line.

33:28

I'm like, what is going on? And they're like, well, we just want you to like, we're just gonna get some B-roll of y'all like talking in a barber shop. And so we're like talking and then rapping. I kind of started having a little a feeling because I think before that too, they were like, have a rap ready. I was like, Oh, okay. Yeah, it was like kind of like they're like, have a rap like ready, or just in case, like while we're talking, like, you know, yeah, it was like something, and then I remember we were in there, and then TI just came out. I was like, What the fuck? Yeah, that's dope. I knew we were gonna meet Killer Mike because it was his shop, you know, he was there, and I was like, that makes sense. But then, yeah, and then they're like, All right, rap. And so that was like those were like real reactions. Like, I genuinely didn't know he was coming. So that was actual footage for the show. That was crazy. That was crazy, and then there's a part that they like cut out that was so crazy was um he like pulled me out after like my rap. I was like, yo, that shit was hard.

34:25

Like, pulled me out of the shop, and I was like, See, I didn't fuck. Yeah. At the time, I'm like, yeah, he was like, That's hard. Like, you gotta think this is something I grew up on, and he's like, Yeah, yo. He was like, That shit was hard. Like, like made it a point to like pull me out except he used some bigger words, probably. He's always got crazy vocabulary, yeah. And so that was that was nuts. That was nuts. So then do you go to LA from there? Or um then I had my uh I think it was then it was the next day. I had my actual Atlanta audition that was the audition on a show. Um made it, and then what they do is it's crazy. They'll like they'll give you like if you get a yes, that isn't it's like American Idol. Like a lot of people get yeses, but they don't actually pick you, which is kind of really fucking devastating. Um we've literally had someone on the show talk about they were on American Idol and they went through the process and then. Yeah, it's like a lot of like seemed like it's a lot of fucking politics. Cause I'm just even thinking, like it comes down to like even like a look, uh demographics, like yeah, it's crazy.

35:31

No, it's really crazy. We literally had someone say like actually, no, we're looking for like a white eastern European, like I can't I can't get in, I can't probably can't say, but like we had a situation where it was like uh I was wondering why a person of like another complexion didn't get in it, and they were like, well, because too many white. people this other white guy Like it was literally like that's how it is so cutthroat. Um they're they're trying to make the most money they can from the show, it's a business. I just saw But it's fucked up a little bit. And then it was like a I remember it was like after I got the yes, it was probably like I had to wait a month of like get the official thing. And I not to be cocky, but like I was I was confident at the time because I was like, I got the extra film of doing a barbershop and then I got a yes, and I was like, maybe like pull, I had like a side interview. I was like, I think I'm good. Um, but I was still a little thing, you know, I was still a little nervous. So then I got the actual uh yeah, and then um they're like, all right, like be ready.

36:33

Like I got remember I was out. I remember I was out drunk with friends, and I got a call. Like I was out in bucket and I was like walking to another bar, and I got a call, and I was like, Oh shit, I gotta pick this up. And they were like, Yeah, uh congrats, like you're like you're going to Hollywood. It was like the American Idol shit. And they were like, You're flying out, like, I think this was like Saturday, like you're flying out Monday morning. They were like, pack your shit up. And I'm like, they're like, pack a lot, kind of thing. And um I gotta call out of work. Yeah, it was it was nuts. It was just like it happened so fast, and I was like, I had to bring one of those big, the biggest suitcase I've ever brought in. And uh it was just like shit just started rolling like fast. It was, it was it was crazy. And how long was the filming process like out in LA then? It was uh I was out there for a month. Yeah, I was out there for a month. That's crazy. And I came back like in between uh for like a couple days. And then it doesn't air for another. Then it doesn't air.

37:29

So I had stopped filming in February and it didn't air till October. Yeah, that's a long time. So I'm on that. I was on an NDA. You couldn't say nothing had to go back to work. Like that was the worst, the worst. I'm the most anxious person. So like that, I will honest, honest to god, say that that like seven, eight months was like the hardest moment of my life. Cause I had to like, I had to mask it. Like I had to really like, because you wanna fucking tell everybody. Not only that, and I want to post on social media or whatever, but then I had to go back and like work as if nothing happened. And I remember I like worked uh, I had worked like a I think it was like uh a Justin Timberlake concert. He like brought out TI, and I'm just like, bro, it was crazy. They told me my raps were hard. Nah, it was so crazy, like, and I just had like little like damn. It was just I had life teasing you. Yeah, it was teasing me. Like I went out of town, went out the country, like I was just I was just trying to kill time. I remember I had the the date in my head, I was like 100 days, like 79 days.

38:32

That's like watching a pot boil. It's not bro, it's not a good thing. And I knew I was like, yo, this shit's gonna, I was like, my life's just gonna definitely change at this, you know, after this, because I've you know, knowing how far I made it and stuff. Yeah, so what were your expectations? Um versus maybe how it played out, right? Like, did you have these super high expectations and then you landed here? Was it vice versa? I think naturally, uh just uh like a little higher. Um it was definitely like life-changing, like I didn't have to, you know, I was I was still working for a bit, you know, a little after, but um definitely put me in positions where I didn't have to, I could, you know, jump and make you know music. But I think a lot of like a lot of it was kind of it was weird because I think in a normal situation it might have went differently, but like at the peak of it all, like that's we got hit with COVID. So it was like, you know, it was it was just weird. Like I don't really know if it would have kept you know going. I I think it's just a big question mark because I don't know if it was gonna die down naturally or if it was because of COVID, but the show did well though.

39:38

It was like number one show in the world. Yeah, so I watched it all for sure. Yeah, and um, so it was just that was that was the weird thing. Um, but you know, who cares? It's in the past now. It is. Did you do you feel because you know, my my thing about I guess reality shows in general is the producers and the editors can do what they do, right? Do you think that you were portrayed in like you know what I mean? Was it pretty true to how everything? Nah, cause well, I will say this. Um I think I went on to the show, because mind you, this is the first time they've ever done a show. So I don't know if I'm going on to American Idol or if I'm going on to the real world. Like, so I was like very conscientious of everything I was doing, and then that PR background. I know, I know like how The Bachelor and all those shows work with like producers and how they cut up stuff. So I was very like calculated with everything I would say. Um managed your expectations.

40:29

And I was younger too. So I think naturally I was a little, I'm not gonna say shy, but I was just very like more so overthinking kind of how it would look. And I think I uh and I was younger too. I think that's just the main key. So I you know, I was younger in my you know, rap career. I hadn't I never performed up to that point. Like it was your first show, right? First time ever performing it was like that first time I think you said that on the show. Fucking nuts. Yeah. Like it was I was the first time. Um, and it was just like nerve wracking. My that's a hell of a stage. Yeah, it's like you know, like I didn't even do like no bar crawl. Like it was like I might have done like one or two like little little things. You freestyled at a party when someone brought out a microphone. Yeah, I mean, it was just it was never as obvious, not that stage where it's like, all right, you're thrust in front of like three Grammy with Tory lanes, yeah. So uh that was like my first time ever doing stuff, but I think as far as the portrayal goes, no, because I felt like there was a lot of times where I had way more, you know, personality and and and was just more uh outgoing and extroverted than it looked.

41:50

So I'm not gonna lie, like I having met you now. It's weird. I've gotten to be around you a good amount like through your relationship with Henry, I was very surprised. Yeah, so the the thing that was the most annoyed, that's the thing that was most annoying. I'll like meet, I'll like meet a fan or somebody out, and they're like, they're like taking it back. I'm like, bro, this is me. Like, it's it's it's it's really night and day, because it's like it made me look like really introverted and like, oh, he's quiet, he's happy to be here. But I was like, I'm not fucking like that at all. Like, but it's cool because I I think it's just like, all right, now like I have control of you know a narrative, I can you know, re- you know, introduce it. But it it is, I think that's one of those things that it genuinely does surprise people. Like they're like, I did not know you had a personality at all. And I'm like, I wasn't in control of the camera. It's like, yeah, there's only so much I could do. You know how many times off camera I was freaking turning up. Yeah, like then and then I think a lot of like the people that were on there with me were what were watching and they're like, bro, I know you're annoyed how you're looking because you're not like that.

42:54

Like it you you I but I mean that's TV. They make it they they chop it up to fit like a narrative. Caleb's just happy to be able to do that. They got an agenda. You know, student. He's just he's glad to be here. The bright lights are he's quiet, focused. Biggest moment of his life. He's he's just happy to be here. This is gonna be his biggest moment in life. And when actuality, like, there's nothing compared to You guys became pretty good friends, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, who did you bond with most? I know Lunch. Obviously, all of them. Um everybody, when we got to probably like the top, top six, that's when it was like everybody that's in the top six, I'm like super, super cool with. Um I just was smoke show. Sam smoke, uh, yeah, Troy, London. Um, I just saw Troy London recently for the first time in a while. since like before COVID. So that was cool. Um they both here in Atlanta or where are they at? Yeah. Okay they're in Atlanta. Um I saw Smoke. He was on tour. I got to see his show. So I got nominated for Best Album. Yeah.

43:50

Best wild album. Yeah, it's nuts. Yeah. It's uh is is is is definitely nuts. It's cool, but it shows just like attainable. Yeah, I mean, it it obviously gave you a platform that you might have otherwise not had maybe as early on, right? I mean, you said you'd only had two songs in a video album. So to go from that to at least have the opportunity to build the platform. I think that if if you know what to do with it, it's still a blessing, what you'd probably say, right? I mean, I mean, it was uh, I mean, I I don't want to ever sound like I'm not. That was like the biggest most like I have no idea what I would be doing right now if I didn't go on a show. Um it is completely 180 my life, you know, expectations, you know, for for you know, I you know, I never thought I would be on a show. I thought obviously I would, you know, you know, climb my music career. I didn't know how it was gonna happen. So that was just like a, you know, it was really just a the major push to to the point that I like so fast that it, you know, everything just started happening kind of fast.

44:56

You hit one of those early ladders and shit. Yeah, it was like a early, like, yeah, like so it was like a kind of for me, it was just okay. Like, I gotta, I gotta figure it out. You know, I obviously we had worked on my project and that my first project in that off time before that. Um shout out Wind Paint Smears. That's uh that's uh that's an oldie. Um but goodie. It is a oldie but goodie. But what we got on the way is yeah, yeah. So tell us kind of how y'all you know started linking up. Um, so my homie Jacob that you know shout out, Jacob beating. Oh yeah. Um I was working with a um right up the street from here. Right up the street. And um, you know, everybody, you know, he's doing music, and I I'm not gonna say I was like bougie or anything, but people like a lot of people after coming off that show be like, bro, I got beats, I got I got beats. And I'm like, yeah, whatever. And Jacob was like adamant about like playing them.

45:53

And I remember he he sent me um, he sent me one in particular that's on my project, and I was like, yo, instantly. I need this one. I was like, I need this one. And he was always telling me about you know, Henry, like, oh, Henry's clothes, he's an engineer. If you need somewhere to record, and I was like, Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he said it, and then uh Ryan Verse. Shout out Verse. Verse, he was like, We'd love to have you on the podcast. Yeah, bro, I'm actually no, I'm slack, I'm the one that's slacking. He's already agreed. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Ben, we'd love to have him on the podcast. He's definitely, yeah, he definitely. Oh, he's gonna be a good one. But Ryan, uh Ryan went to high school with me as well. He went to high school with me, and he went to PC and Presbyterian. So me and Ryan, we were always we always been locked in. And um, he uh, you know, he's man, he manages Chi Chi. Chi Chi and went to college with me too. So it oh I forgot, yeah. Yeah, so it was just like, and then he was like, yo, go to Henry, like, and I was like, okay, that's two people two people. Yeah. And he's right up.

46:50

I was like, is it it makes no sense for me not to? Yeah. And you know, naturally, me and my dog hit it off. Yeah, and locked in ever since. Whole whole whole project. Yes, been right here. Yeah, Verse is one of the first people to take my call, like, you know, just me seeing that he was doing music or whatever. I was just trying to network, right? He's a new manager, I was a new manager, didn't know anyone in the industry, right? I was trying to like start making plays for Henry, so I was actually the one that just like had hit up verse. Right. He like FaceTimes me immediately, and and you know, like that's how he is. And yeah, we just hit it off. So that that was cool that he he he immediately put that play together for you guys to to link up, and it's been a beautiful one. It's been beautiful. Yes. No, I'm I'm looking forward to the project. I've heard heard a lot of it. Ooh, let me tell you. It's special. Yeah. Special. And I've I've been I've been you know holding it and making getting all my ducks in a row because it I can't I can't waste the a moment. Do we have the title? Can we can we get a one more time exclusive?

47:47

Yeah, I mean real quick. I mean maybe a little one more time exclusive. I'll give you the initials. Oh, okay, okay. It's a tricky. We'll take it. Yeah. It okay. So it does go on that. I did the like Wind paint smears, so it's like wind blank blank. Oh, so we already know what the W is. W T C R. W T C R. I actually don't know the title, so he he does, but I don't. Sure as fuck No, let's go. Henry, I'm gonna get it out of you. Um I can't say anything. It's it's unbelievable. Like I I love it. Covers, unbelievable. Top to bottom. I'm I'm just super excited about it. And I think the growth from wind paint smears to now is like night and day. Um, I think I've just completely grown up as an artist, and I think it's what makes me so excited about it is um, you know, obviously I do like the freestyles and I drop you know singles in the meantime, but I think drop the freestyles, by the way. Oh, yeah, I'm those are definitely coming.

48:52

Yes. I already talked to Duran. I was like, dude, if you need to put those on fucking YouTube or something somewhere. Yeah, I'm a I'm a they cannot just live on IG, bro. I might literally drop them like after this. Like, bro, we'll do it like an hour or two. No time like the present. Uh oh, I'm definitely dropping all of those. Um, I wish I could fucking put them on platforms, but definitely not trying to get sued. Yeah, that's all good. Um those are those are definitely coming. But yeah, that was like the the thing that will hold it over in the meantime. But definitely, yeah, this project, like I said, is night and day from from Wind paint Smears. Um, we literally have been working on shit like a year and a half, two years. Like it's it's nuts. Yeah. And I'm I think it's Henry mainly's always like, yo, like, don't hold the music like too long. Yeah, bro. Definitely don't want to. That's why I was like trying to drop stuff in the meantime. So do we have an estimated delivery date? Because we've had a couple before, but we we they've passed. We've had we have.

49:50

Yeah, because bro, I mean, you only released two songs in 2021. I'm just gonna call call it out. Yeah, right. I mean, you know, like it's uh you know what's what's the thought process there? Um, we live in a day and age where like we need it, we need more. We we definitely do. I was um in a situation, you know, trying to figure out the label route. Okay, trying to shop around a little bit, shop it around a little bit uh first. And um, because I I had a friend that was in a similar similar situation. That it kind of really is what scared me. And they were like, yo, they were about to get a deal from so and so, and they were like, yo, so where's the new music? And they were like, he was like, I just dropped the project, and they're like, uh what's next? Don't care. Yeah, what do you have now? And I was like, yo, the worst thing I could do, and I think as conceptual as this project is, I just know that if I were to get the the the marketing and the the push behind it, yeah, and I could do what I really envisioned for doing it, then it's gonna, it's gonna go. Like I'm a hundred percent sure it'll go.

50:56

But I I feel like it's this is not something that I could just drop and and just be like all right let me see and hope you know it's more attractive for a label to have this packaged product yeah ready for like I got the street cover, I got marketing ideas, I got so many ideas for it, and it's just like, y'all, just somebody just gets behind it, then it's it's a wrap. but you know I I definitely I this year I told myself I was like yo I'm not even like at a certain point I'm like fuck it like I'm I'm really about to just let shit fly and I think in the meantime what I will say on here is before the project I'm gonna drop a pack which is very soon like soon soon what kind of pack um I'm gonna do two songs I'm gonna do I think I'm gonna do like two three songs that didn't make the project that are still fire but I felt like didn't fit the theme of the project yeah and I'm I'm just let them shit fly and then like when I press the button the rest of the year is just like you heard it here first and it's gonna keep a One More Time exclusive. I mean, you know, we love a good three piece. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm there. It's it's it's it's all about to, I'm about to let the floodgates open. I've I've it's been long enough. Um, and I think I will say this, 20, like I could have done more in 2021, but 2020 was just fucking bizarre. Like, yes, I'm so glad y'all bro oh no no for sure no but I I I I want somebody that stays on me it's it's more just me being like a fan a fan yeah it's like I need I think um you know I can listen to I always look back and I'm like I'm so glad I didn't drop a project in 2020 because I don't really think anybody wanted to hear music then. Like I can honestly. it's a weird time. It was a weird time. Can anybody name the best album of 2020?

52:39

I don't think you can. Yeah. I don't think you can. It's tough like there's no, it wasn't, uh, it wasn't the top of my mind. Yeah. If you could redo rhythm and flow, what would you do differently?

54:39

Um I would I would uh just make music that I've liked. I feel like there was points where I was like, I gotta make something that the judge was like, and now I I wish I would just say fuck it, and I would have just kept making shit like Michelangelo and shit, and I would have probably fucking would have won. Good one. If you were in the industry and not as an artist, what would you be doing? And you say in the industry? Music industry. I'd be like a CEO. Like I'd be like the A&R, like, yeah, for sure. I don't like when people don't try new things. Like, I don't I don't like that kind of stubbornness. And my biggest pet peeve. I say this all the time. My biggest pet peeve is when I go to sports games and people have jerseys of teams that are not playing in the game. Why are you at a Hawks just stay on Lakers game with a Spurs jersey?

57:37

58:33

Part one. Pretty good. Really good. It was fun. That was really good. That was fun. Some of the answers were longer, but it would, they started them quick. But but yeah, very thorough. Thorough. The blueberries got him thinking a little bit, but overall, great first part of the rampage. Really good. Moving on to the this or that. I'm gonna give you that all right, two options. Just pick the one right off the top of your head. All right. Here we go. Part two. Working hard, hardly working. Working hard. I just wanted to start with that one. That's That's amazing. That's gonna be the easiest one. They get harder. Wanted to say it. The delivery was impeccable. Thank you. Yeah. Lyrics or flow? Flow. Unanimous still. Bro, you do have to switch it up and say flow or lyrics and see if that changes the uh one guy commented that the order. And I kind of felt that though. I kind of felt that. Alright, I'll change it. Tattoos or piercings? Tat guys or tags. LinkedIn or OnlyFans?

1:01:29

Only fans. Yeah, you ever thought about starting one? No. No. There's some there's some different shit on there though now. It's not just porn stars. Yeah, no, for sure. I'd be the guy that would like be on OnlyFans. Like somebody sign up for OnlyFans and be like, in 2000, Gladiator won best picture in 2001. Blink one is every piece of content would be like everyone. No, but real talk, like uh fucking DDG or something, the YouTuber who dated uh either Ruby Rose or Amber Rose. I can't remember which rose, but one of the roses. Fuck no. It's probably healthier. Oh, definitely. Might be. I don't know. Smartphones pretty toxic. That's true. Like actually. Yeah. You have a 75% chance of going platinum or a 25% chance of going diamond. Oh man. Diamond. Going for it. You're risking it for the biscuit. I might do it. Going for it?

1:03:28

Consistent. Couple, yeah, very consistent so far. It's all gonna boil down to this last part. This is the word association. All right. I'm gonna fire one word at you. Fire the first thing right back at me off the top of your head. Cool. Here we go. One more time podcast, episode 43, Caleb Collossus. Random. Wait, okay.
