I didn't think any of those songs would be on an album. I just made them as like let's warm up type shit. And then I went back home for the first time since being in LA, and I played my mom uh some of the songs in the car, and she was like, bro, what? This is your album. And I was like, oh. Oh, yeah, okay, true. True, true, true. One more time. Spin the rock, spin it. One more time. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the One More Time Podcast. I'm Playback Ben here with my co-host, Henry with a three, aka H3. H3, who do we have in the hot seat today? Welcoming in on episode 93 of the One More Time podcast. You know him for his legendary work with System of a Down. It's Serj Tankian. It's actually an amazing comparison, I'm not gonna lie. Way younger, but, you know. Have you ever gotten that before?

0:57

Uh musically, I don't know. Oh, cool. Okay. That's why I thought it was so cool. Sure. Or both. Let's go both. Okay. Yeah. In all seriousness, we have. I don't even know what genre we can even like call you, but we have an amazing artist and a good friend of the One More Time family. We got Riz LaVie in the building. He is in Atlanta for a few days, stopped by for his tour stop at the vinyl. We were at the show last night. Great show. Amazing show. We'll get into that. But Henry, then the word Riz is just. Yeah, you've surely you've seen this, right? We wanted to at least get your take on like the boom of the word. Yeah, we wanted to clear the air about you have receipts. You were Riz first. Uh there are lots of receipts. Yes. Yes. I had it first. Um but yeah. Uh it's cool. Is that yeah, is it is that like something that you feel some type of way about? Not at all. Do you have to address it often?

1:53

Or is this the first time? I have to address it often, but at the same time, I'm really happy that it means, like, anything remotely positive. Sure. Or fun. You know? like words can mean a million different things. I'm I'm just thankful that the etymology stays clear. Yeah. I'm so it definitely could have gone viral for like much worse reasons. Like Henry, you never know tomorrow. Your name might mean something completely different. Think about everyone named Karen in the world and how much they're suffering right now. Oh god, you know what I mean? Dude, Karen's stock dropped like ridiculously. There probably hasn't been a baby named Karen in years. at this point. If it was Karen LaVie, I'd be fucked. Fuck. Karen LaVie does not have quite the same ring to it. Not quite. Um, so yeah, I wanted to talk about this. Shout out to all the Karens that are cool. Yeah, we feel bad for y'all. Yeah. Shout out. That's wrong. Shout out to all those old Karens that are still holding down. No, No, no, no. I mean, just regular normal people who are named Karen by chance. Yeah.

2:49

And they're like dope as shit. And they're like, yeah, my name is Karen. And they're not like asking for the manager at an Applebee's. no, no, they are the manager. Yes. I don't know. Yo, I wonder if they stutter like the way he just did, you know, like they're scared to introduce themselves. My name's Damn it. It's Karen. My name's Carrie. You can call me Carrie. Carrie. Call me Kay. Yo, Carrie's have probably gone up in stock, for sure, just to move away from the Karens. I know a Carrie. She was cool. Yeah, yeah. Shout out to them. So, you know, like I mentioned, you're on tour and you've gone on a couple of tours, you know, across the country, right? I wanted the people out there to understand, like everyone thinks like tour life, shit is lit every night. Like, you know, like, but I wanted to get the real is it? I wanted to get the real deal. Like, how is it touring as an independent artist? Yeah, so I mean, I always say, like, to my group, to my people that are with me, like, I'm like, yo, this is the Olympics. So, like, before the tour, we treat it like the Olympics, we train like like it's the Olympics, and then while we're in the Olympics, we treat it like it's the Olympics, you know.

3:56

Yes, keep your mind aligned, your body on point, you know what I mean? Like, we're trying not to do too much. So, and I haven't even I stopped drinking, like, drinking and smoking and doing anything just like a month and a half before we even started the tour, just to like really stay present. So, yeah. It is a lot of like rock stardom type shit, but at the same time, you gotta balance it with the like okay. Like, for instance, we've been up till six or seven in the morning every night for the last like I don't even know. But you know, we sleep after that, yeah. Sleep when we're dead, You got to keep it balanced, yeah. Still get your hours in. So, you know, so you mentioned it's kind of like you gotta train. Yeah, what what are the you know, what's the training regimen like before you leave for tour? You know, what I mean, what are you doing? You might want to take a jog, do some jump rope yoga, make sure you're like, you know, doing staying present in your body. Yeah, yeah, there's nothing worse than like a gassed artist that's just like three songs in and just like huffing and puffing and can't hit any notes anymore, you know.

5:03

Sometimes I was an ad character. True, that's true. I'll get it. I agree, you know. I was explaining this to my dad today, so I had to drop my mom off to get a hip replacement. Shout out to her, she's all good. I was bumping the project, right? Because I told you last night when you know, I was at the show, I'd only made it a few songs in, so I was finishing the project. My dad was like feeling it. So you got a 76-year-old man that was like vibing to your new project. So just you know, this guy's spanning all age groups right now with his music, his demographics are not boxed in. Low-key means a lot. I appreciate that. That is dope. He does. 76. That's an old dad, too. Like, and and I was like, Yeah, this is the show that I went to last night. He's like, Oh, cool. Like, and he was like, Does he have like a live band or whatever? And he's asking me all these things about the show. And I was telling him about how like rappers, bro, since they're so used to like punching in some rap shows, for example, they can't even rap their own raps, it's so bad, bro. Like performances are just trash. Like, there's a reason why rappers get like a bad, you know, reputation for performing sometimes, and like they're being just boring ass, like terrible shows because they're so used to like punching in bars that they don't even know if they can rap their song appropriately or whatever. And I just was amazed at like how you're able to command the crowd, get through because you you're kind of spitting sometimes, bro.

6:18

Like, you definitely have hip hop elements, which I think is what makes your music and like style so cool because it's it is very like ethereal, yet like you're kind of spitting sometimes, you know what I mean. Um, but I was just telling him about like how rappers are, and he was just like fascinated by this, like right, yeah, right. A lot of those rappers don't do the rehearsal, I feel like that you're doing too. Because, like, even if you are punching in doing complicated kind of stuff, you can figure out a way where, like, okay, I can you know take a pause here, you know, create a show track that is tailored to a way that will make it work, you know. what I mean, but that effort's not always being put in, I feel like. Yeah, yeah, lazy. I mean, sometimes sometimes you don't need it. Sometimes whatever keeps the vibe afloat, and if they can keep the vibe afloat without having to rap every word or without having to do anything, it's okay. If they're having fun, like it's okay. It's the vibe first. They don't have to rap every word. If if it's that kind of show and like you're being, you know, you want to show off that you're like, this is what I wrote. This is how I want to do it, like then that's what you want to do.

7:17

But you know, to each other, you don't have to do that. I just feel like a lot of people walk away from a lot of rap shows disappointed. Like, I don't know, maybe it's just the people I've talked to, but like people are kind of underwhelmed sometimes by like the level of performance, right? That comes with a lot of rap shows. I don't know. It depends, it depends on the artist, I think. Yeah, for sure. So, you know, you performed at least maybe maybe half your set was Haven. Yeah, we did like maybe nine or ten Haven songs, yeah. Okay, 14 songs on there. So, yeah, That's a lot. yeah. So it was definitely like a solid majority of last night's performance that was new shit that the project's only been out what a week, a week. Less than a week, yeah. So, like, how is it for you? A lot of people like myself, even who are our fans, right? We didn't have the time necessarily to digest it. We clearly didn't have the chance to maybe like run through it multiple times. How is it performing like the new shit in front of the audience when they haven't really had a chance to digest it yet? I think for some of those songs, like she said, or like a nighttime where you're like you hear them singing it back, like and they're expecting almost, they've experienced it to such a deep degree, like it's been a moment for them, like performing that for them is like a that's another echelon of like you know, special, but sometimes you just want to play a song that they don't know yet, or that they haven't made those memories with yet, so that you can put into it that energy first, so that when you do go, like I didn't, you know, some bands I didn't know before I went to go see their shows, and I will walk away and be like, Fuck, I love this band.

8:53

Like, yeah, I'm so glad I get to go listen to that shit, or like artists, anybody, and then you know, you go and you have that energy to walk you through. So songs like Fire Escapes, songs like Little Planets, like Ghani, even like all those songs. Now you're gonna be like, Oh, I know what that energy is supposed to feel like. I'm gonna walk with that. Like when I walk, I'm gonna walk with that energy, and it's gonna play in my ears when I'm having that, you know. Yeah, because it they're both gratifying, but it's a different kind of gratifying. So why not both? yeah, right. You can have both. Yeah, it's like they can work in reverse, right? Where sometimes I listen to a studio album, and then when I hear it live, I'm like, oh fuck, yeah, like this is exactly what I wanted, right? And then to your point, I think I went to it was like an OAR concert. Did you ever listen to OAR? They had that one song, right? Yeah, they had a bunch of like kind of you know, you know, popular hits, but they were like a big, you know, a big band with like sax and drums, guitar, whatever. And I had never heard of them, and I just went with my sister and her friends. They had an extra ticket.

9:49

I had no fucking idea what I was signing up for, like, literally hadn't heard of them, hadn't heard a song. But then when I went back and listened to the discography after the show, it just hit different, bro. Like, and so that there is something to say. Yes, I'll never, I'll never forget it, and it just makes you listen to it in such a different light. And it's definitely a hurdle. Like, you have to be committed enough to jump there. Because otherwise, if you just want to, I could have played the whole catalog and just waited and chilled and left the mic out the whole time. Yeah, you have to want it and like be like, nah, like this is what you should be on because this is what's changing my brain. And if you rock with what I've done so far, like, okay, you're gonna want to progress like in that way, in that frequency. So yeah, that just seems like the definition of vulnerable, right? For me. Because like you said, you could have just given them the Riz hits, bro. The ones that are proven, tried and true. Like this is what you know they're gonna fuck with. They're yelling that you know, you're dealing with them, yelling the songs they want to hear, and then you're like, yo, like, chill.

10:49

Can I get can I get some of this new Haven shit off my chest? You know what I mean? Dude, That's gotta be tough, man. Because it's good, it'll get easier and easier every show. Yeah, I mean, even from the first show, people knew some of the words that came out that day. Yeah, that's cool. I've experienced that too, where because you know, you've maybe teased it on lives, or like this, that, and the third. Which, by the way, there was a funny live story you were telling me. What happened what happened again with some guy on his live? Shout out to yeah, some fan on your live that asked you not to play Stay in Phoenix because it's his ex-girl's favorite song. Yo, when you played Stay last night, Henry goes, Poor guy in Phoenix. Riz is definitely playing stay. in Phoenix. It's a smash. The crowd went crazy. I'm playing Stay. You gotta play stay in Phoenix, bro. Yo, it it'll build character for that guy. Like, I think it's gonna help him get stronger. It's crazy how their ex is gonna be at the show, and they already know that. Yes, it's a crazy situation. I don't know, I don't know what their life is like, but I'm curious to find out. Maybe shout him out like in the in the before it drops, you know. Shout out to everyone involved.

11:46

Yeah, I wish you all the best. That's amazing. Yeah, so you know, you kind of talked about the pre-tour rituals. What's like a day of show pre-show ritual like for you? Yeah, so I mean, we're still pretty early on in this tour, so I'm really just like allowing, you know, trying to figure it out. But drink a lot of water, stop at like a gas station. Maybe we just bought a football. We're excited about that. Like, everyone rejoiced. Like, we came home with the football, everyone was like, Yes! Like we've been talking about it for so long. So we finally got one of those. Like, we were we were just standing outside of this McDonald's for like you know, an hour because we had a really long drive. We'd be pulling these drives off like crazy. So we were just like, heck, let's just sit here. And so we were like, Yeah, I wish we had a football. I was wondering why they're so excited about the football. We're so happy, so yeah, just little shit like that. And then, like, you know, for me, like, I'm doing my my vocal warm-ups. I'm doing my like breathing, I'm doing my meditation and my like little stints of yoga and a patch of ground that isn't disgusting somewhere.

12:54

Hopefully, didn't bring a yoga mat, got a swing by a Marshalls. maybe top one. Um, yeah, I mean, just simple shit like that. Drinking a lot of like energy drinks in general. Shout out Yerba Mate. Shout out to Yerba one time. We're still looking for that sponsorship. If you guys happen to peep this interview by for no random chance. Shout out to Yerba. we love your product. We just had a call with them the other day, they were really special. So we uh was started talking about um like oh, I really love like Earth Day. A lot of my music kind of surrounds like around the earth and doing good things for them, blah blah blah. And they were like, Oh, yeah, so we're doing this activation in New York City for Earth Day. So I don't know, I'm rocking with it. There's a lot of synchronicity there. Do you think the earth is like is it's kind of fucked? I hate to like put it that way, but depends on what timeline you're picking, yeah. I think what does that mean? what does that mean? Five to ten years versus like 20, 25 to almost. I thought he was saying like dimensions of time or something. Low-key,

13:52

yeah. That's why I was like, you know, like if I think um, like I have this pretty distinct thought on like uh the afterlife and stuff like this. So everyone has like their own faiths and opinions and ideas, and like I'm just a believer in like okay, all that's true. Like if that if that is what you believe, like that is true. And like if you believe there's a blah blah blah and there's a blah blah blah, and there's a blah blah blah, like bet true. How about flat earthers? Fuck it, true. If you believe it, true. I don't care. If that's what you believe, bro, that's real for you. Like, love it. Go crazy. it's real because like they believe it and they act like it and it's their life. They spend mad time thinking about it. Yeah, I don't think any I don't spend any time thinking about whether the earth is anything. I'm just here. So yeah, I mean, I really if that's if that's their passion, that's good. Yeah, good job. And I mean, bro, you are you know, you mentioned even like the Earth Day stuff and you know, the you know, the kind of the synergies between Yerba's brand and maybe what you got going on. Like, you're like a a spiritual ass dude, man.

14:56

I mean, this guy was passing around incense in the crowd last night at the show. You need to take a breath, you know. Yeah, like a pause in the show. It's all breathe deep, breathe to the bottom of your ribs. Absolutely. And and I'm just trying to understand. Wait, until Jack put it out because he said it was a fire hazard. Burn! Did you it may or may not be true? We we can't confirm or deny that. No, no, I've left them, I've left them unattended in my apartment enough times to know that they're not gonna start a fire. So, like, how would you describe your belief system? I guess, like, you know, what what do you identify, like, with or as? Yeah, like I'm pretty fluid, like I I just try to give myself the space to believe anything that I'm in, like full heartedly, and I just I know that we're like I feel that we're just like cups of water from this big ocean of energy, you know. And I just believe in that ocean, and I know it's like that's my personal belief is like we are just in this big ocean.

16:02

Like fish don't know they're in the ocean. You know? Yeah. That's a good one. There's a lot of good air around us. And I'm just enjoying that connection to the greater energy source. Yeah, for all we know, we're the fish. Exactly. Right? Yo, people like him stress me out, bro. I'm so type A and like anxious. I'm like, oh yeah, like just you know, we're all fluid, and I'm just like, no, we're not, bro. No, we're fucking not, bro. What do you need? No, I don't know. Like, I wonder what is yours? What happens? I don't know. That's the point. Is like let's do a little therapy session. for Ben. It's the definition of I think the definition of anxiety straight up is like worrying about things that you can't control, obviously, or that you don't know about, right? Fear of the future. Yeah, and like fear. Anxiety, fear of the future, depression, fear from the past. Past, correct. Yeah. Yeah, and like that's a hundred percent just, and I've gotten better, I think, to be honest. Like, I I've you know, kicked some of my bad habits from the past that I think, you know, drinking water, exercising, doing all that stuff, like smoking crack.

17:10

Yeah, it was the crack addiction for sure. That really did me in. Um, but you know, just I I've dealt with stuff in the past also that have, you know, fuck with my mental. And I mean, everyone's dealt with their own shit, but like, as of late, I've been feeling, I would say, more able to see how people can like you can exist. Like, you know, I sometimes like I've met, you know, I've had friends like you, and it's just like I'd always ask them like, what the fuck? How do you how can you actually be just so okay with that, right? And I I just want I'm such a like I want to solve the problem and like know what's happening so badly that there's no problem it's just being okay with not yeah there is no problem no it's so true yeah it's so true so so where do you get this kind of belief you know system from was it from like friends or family members like kind of I mean there are problems that we can fix Sure, sure. I'm not you know um I I think you know growing up my family just went through enough things where we were like okay like I'm going to choose cognizantly, like to like glass half full but you know in practice it's difficult and it trains your patience and it trains your like ability to see solutions so instead of like dwelling on problems you're like okay there's there's this much problem there's this much solution like find it you know and that's just kind of what I try to go through every day is like I have this big problem where like sometimes I just don't want to do anything and I just want to lay in bed and like never leave and I'll just like I have a little Google home I'll be like yo the the feds I'll be like as if that's a solution. Yeah I'll just be like yo set a timer for 10 minutes and I'll just get up and do whatever I need to do for 10 minutes and I'll just promise myself like okay boom 10 minutes from now I'll go back to bed or whatever I want to do and yeah I'll just normally after that 10 minutes, everything's good.

19:17

I'll go on with my day. I don't have to do anything, you know, go back to any start sort of mode. Just get in the studio. And uh yeah. Yeah. You know, solutions for everywhere. Yeah. But I don't know. Practicality. I just, you know, just try to figure it out. No, I think, and that's what I think searching for the answers when to your point. Everyone who thinks that what they think is right, like maybe they are. Right. So the the best case scenario is just to let them believe it. And you know, as long as you're not doing, you know, you know, obviously there's some like things we want to maybe exclude, right? Boundaries. Yes, sure. There are boundaries. But like the flat earthers probably aren't like ruining my day, but but by believing that the earth is flat, they're not really doing anything to change It's just nonviolent. Yeah, to change the trajectory of you know what I got going on. But you you talk a lot about the moon. Yeah. What what what's the like obsession with the moon you got going on here? I mean, people have been obsessed with the the heavenly bodies for a long time, you know. Okay.

20:16

And uh I don't know, I just like it. It's cool. It's like uh my mom. Do you like read about it and stuff, or like how do you yeah, like how did you like my mom is like a big integral part of my life. Okay. So like she obviously, and so she really like when we were young, she would just like take us outside on like full moons, and we would just do little like you know, routines and just kind of look around and just appreciate the moment. Like the thing about the moon and the connection with that, it could be really anything, but because it's so like it has this pull, it has a natural pull, and it's closer than anything else to our planet. Like if you can just appreciate that moment a little bit. It's new every day, it gives you something new, but it's also consistent throughout time, and you can always go back to that consistency. And if you learn its rhythm, it can lend to your rhythm. And then you're like, okay, weird. I'm I'm also waxing, I'm also waning. Like, I'm also feeling like kind of tucking in. I'm also feeling like, okay, I'm gonna pop out today. Like, what's good, you know?

21:13

Like, like you know, so it reminds me of like uh Hollywood movies when the the guy and the girl are like broken up, but then they're like looking at the moon at the same time. Yeah, it's romantic. You know, what I mean? Yeah. exactly like they're both in the moment. For sure, yeah, there's a cinema, like a cinematic quality to it. Yeah, and there's a science behind it too, right? I mean, it's behind like the tides and shit. It's actually like it's really doing some of the shit, like scientifically. Yeah, I mean, we have no idea. No idea, but like do you make it up? I don't know how much it has a say on what we're doing? Yeah, I think it's a lot, but you might think it's a little someone might think it's a little, but I have no idea. Yeah, but I feel it, though. I'm the type that at least I I am also very much one to like admit I don't fucking know. So, like if someone like you has read up on like the moon and or like feels this certain way, like I'm not I'm not really one to be like you're fucking wrong, you know what I mean? So, like I'm open to hearing that's why I was like actually really curious to ask you about this whole thing. So, like, do you go and like check out the moon every night?

22:11

Is it like that? Yeah, I mean, not like I mean, I'm the first one to notice it. Yeah, sure. Like we're all standing outside, there goes Riz and the moon, and you're like, Yes, got a nice quarter crescent tonight. Yeah, I mean, it's fire. Like, you're just like you look up at it, you're like, Yeah, that's special, it's not like anything else. And so this is completely ignorant on my part. So I know you have a song, obviously, that's gone crazy, Pisces, and you are a Pisces, right? Okay, yeah, yeah. It's hype. That's it. Okay, does the moon have to do with the zodiac stuff at all? Or yeah, like for sure. Okay, so I didn't know. All right. So are you into that, or does it just the song happened to go pretty crazy? Like when I was young, my mom like fully, fully informed us and was just like, she's a Pisces as well. So like she'd just be on that. She's always been like, like the secret, you know, by um Yeah, the secret. Yeah. Okay.

23:06

Yeah. She told me this like years and years and years ago when I was like a really young kid. And I used to come into the lunchroom and like kit tell kids at my lunch table this shit. And they would be like, yo, bro. The fuck are you talking about? Yeah. So like I can only imagine. Yeah, you feel me? So yeah, I mean, we've just kind of always been on this wave. And the world has slowly become more and more like this. When I was young, I didn't see when I dropped Pisces. I would go on Twitter and search Pisces, like shit around the like some of the lyrics, like just to see who's listening to the song. Some most of the tweets around Pisces would just be like, hey, you know, it's my birthday, Pisces season. Like it only had to do with the birthday. There was no like characteristics or traits of Pisces or Pisces moons or like, you know, this is like old, old knowledge, but at the same time, it's like it wasn't culturally prevalent, like prevalent. Like people weren't discussing it.

24:05

Whereas now it is absolutely everywhere. So it's like, okay, cool. Most of the things that I was always into are like extremely culturally relevant now, and we'll probably continue to be more and more relevant to us as a people because we're looking for alternate means of information because we don't feel like what we were raised with was really like the whole truth. So a lot of people are kind of like looking out for like alternate means of truth right now. So you see a lot of people getting sucked into this idea or sucked into this idea, and just taking from it what they can and then being like, okay, I feel the truth there. This resonates with me. I'm gonna leave this, but this resonates with me, I'm gonna leave this. And they're trying to form their own belief system, their own way of understanding the world because what we were taught wasn't really like how things feel right now. Yeah, we don't have a lot of like information that we were brought up on that can help guide us on what we're going through. And I think people are looking for that in a lot of different things.

25:02

They are that this is how Andrew Tate came to power, I think. It's misguided fucking people. Well that took a turn, Henry. Yeah, sorry to I mean that's really how like you know, no, but people that don't yeah, feel like that they're not look finding what they are looking for, and maybe an outdated system to have going on. It is interesting though. I think we all have this, you know, innate like one like desire to find the information that proves whatever we already like thought in our mind. I can't remember what the bias is called. Yeah, right. So yeah, exactly. And so now that there's so many people saying all sorts of shit, right? If I thought anything similar to what Tate started spewing out of his mouth, I would just gravitate towards it, right? Because it's like, oh, I already like thought some of that shit anyway. So like let me just eat up everything that Tate's saying, and then you know, if I was into the stuff that like you know, Riz obviously like seems to be into, then maybe I would like lean more into that. So yeah, it definitely seems like discernment, yeah. The the skill here is discernment.

25:59

Like you have to train yourself to really know what is for you and what is not for you. The average person can't do that though, bro. They can, they don't. I mean, they can, they don't though. I'm just gonna say it, they don't. They don't train. There is no average person. Oh, yeah, that's okay. This guy. So I would hate to be that. I would hate to do that. An average Joe, I know. Who's walking around. Good thing we're not. They're an average person. I think I'm an average. person. Probably a lot of people. actually. You're Above average, bro. I mean, there is no average, but like you're you're outside of oh shit, okay. Okay, I see you. If I'm above average, there has to be an average. How are you gonna define above average if there isn't the standard that's average? I don't mean to be overtly esoteric. No, that's fine. yeah, I know so you know, Haven, uh, I think one of the singles, if not, you know, was was FYP the only single? Yeah, I mean, we dropped uh songs before it. Yeah, yeah, just nightlight. I mean, yeah, cop the NFT myself. Yeah, thank you so much. Absolutely, man. Had to, man. It's the first time he's realizing that. It's amazing.

26:55

Yeah, yeah. This is the NFT holder right here, bro. Yeah, I know. I appreciate this. I'm a holder, man, for sure. He's like seriously. Would you like me to drop more? Like, is that something that you are on the lookout for? Like people to be dropping more NFTs. I believe the technology is still, you know, extremely young. For sure. And and um, you know, but that you know, for people that kind of understand what it's doing and how cool it can be, um, it is valuable. Almost like I just love you as an artist. I love to support you. Thank you, but I also think that you could become this fucking huge person. I think that the value of these are all going up, you know what I mean, uh, over time. So it's cool like as an investment and it's cool as a support thing. So I just love the technology behind it. I think we're away a ways away from people really understanding that whole market is obviously very beat down right now. When this technology first surfaced, like when people were first like came into my consciousness, I was like, okay, cool. Like, what are some of the use cases I could find for like what this could be? And I was like, oh bro, like insurance, like yes, health insurance.

27:54

Oh, bro, every market, all of them medical, yeah, drivers, all this stuff. Lawyers, like I mean, it literally name a profession. And then like everything that I thought about just kind of like surfaced and became like a thing. I was like, cool. They got it covered. Yes, it's all good. Yes, appreciate it. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. So, like, what made you want to do it? You know what I mean? Um, I I remember there just being like a couple homies that I was really fucking with, and they were like just dropping, and I was like, yo, if that's like, you know, um, like I'm down, and it was fun. Like, I I got to type out like this paragraph describing the song, which you don't you can't put on Spotify or like any of like the things. Like, yep. If every one of my songs on Spotify, you could click on it and there'd be a player a paragraph like describing the song from me, or from this article or this thing, like that'd be so fun and immersive, but you can't do that. So for for that thing, I got to like do like a whole suite of stuff that um the purchasers would would get.

29:00

And there was like a golden egg one, yeah. The golden egg. I remember I got to like you get to pick like a certain like seven seconds of the song or something, and then when you meant, and then if you meant if you picked the the right seven seconds, you got the golden egg kind of thing. Yeah, it was it was super cool. I was actually at the dentist, and um, I was like wrapping up and I was like, while you guys are working on me, can I like mint an NFT while you guys are finishing those dude? And they were like, sure, go for it. And it was like that's epic. It was great. Yeah, so so you spent time here in Atlanta, obviously, you know, you're from New Jersey, spent a lot of time in New York, most recently moved out to LA, right? Like, what what which has been your like is New York still like just yes your favorite spot on on the earth? Right. Like, I I have a kind of a frenetic like frequency to me sometimes, so New York kind of matches that the most. Like, if I want to just be, you know, park day or street stay or whatever it might be.

30:02

Like, I like that the city is alive. I like that there's like people on the street, it's vivid, feels like a movie. I'm really into that quality of life where you're like, this shit feels like a movie. Like, that's good. Um, that's the vibe I get every time I go to New York, bro. Like, I'm just like on my shit, and I'm just walking everywhere and like people watching and just wondering like what the hell is everyone out here doing and stuff. So what so why LA? Um, I just really wanted to dive deep into like this process and kind of step away from everything that I already knew super well, and just like you know, hit a little reset button. You feel me? Like, if I didn't leave New York, like I would be there my whole life. I'm probably gonna end up there back again at some point, or like hit a little bi-coastal flex. Like, I don't know. So that'd be nice, you know. So do six months in Japan, you know, who knows? You hear me?

30:59

Yes, that's what we're trying to do. It's in the moment, man. Yeah, well, well, because you know, FYP obviously is you know, a song that kind of paints this picture of like I mean, you almost seem like super like sad, of course, that you left this, you know, place that you fell in love with in New York, right? Yeah, it's like FOMO, yeah. Like when you're scrolling and you see the homies on the timeline, you're like, fuck, bro. like I'm in this fucking boof ass city. And you're like, you know what I mean? You're like, why am I not in New York? And it wasn't too serious. Well, I was really in the studio. Lucy had just pulled up from Australia, wrote the song in 10 minutes. Wow, Wow. 15. I don't know. Like, you know, just one really quick bang. And those are the ones sometimes, those ones where you just aren't thinking too hard and shit just pops off and comes out smooth. Those are the best songs every time. I totally agree. It's just real. No edit, no filter. It was just very easy. like the harder you gotta work on a song, the higher the chance that it's not one of the ones. Sometimes.

31:57

Sometimes, yeah. Sometimes it's worth like putting the extra kind of work into it if you really believe in it. Yeah. But it should start with that easiness. It should start with that. Yeah, for Saturn. Like, I remember just being in my room in Brooklyn. And I just had this like laptop set up, my like first little mic setup. And boom, I just tracked it, freestyled it, two seconds, and didn't think anything of it. Closed it. Dan came to my to visit me in New York for like a month. And uh Dan Hartzog. Shout out Dan Hartzog. one time. Major boom boom boom. A one more time podcast alumni. One of my favorite people. Loved his interview too, man. Yeah. So yeah, my brother came up one time. And he was like, yo, did you ever get that beat? Like this one. It goes like blah blah blah. I'm like, oh yeah, fucking freestyled over that. Open it up. He was like, oh, this is fire. I was like, no way. I didn't think anything of it. Like, I thought it was, you know, whatever. And so I was like, cool, let's run it.

32:56

So I took it to one studio, Spartan Studios with Marvier. Uh ended up coming down to Atlanta, tracking it at Castle Hill with Shout out Castle Hill. Yup. Um with Gantt. And then on the C800. And then yup. it got stolen and they got it back. I don't know if you saw that. Their C800 got stolen. Wow, I didn't see that, but that's crazy. They had to like buy it back, I think, on some fraud shit. Literally, the guy that stole it, like sold it back to them. Sold it back to them. Extortion. Yeah, That's the definition. Yeah. He was probably a wall Street banker. Right. Um let's not generalize Riz. My bad. Okay, you seem like a very tolerant guy. Yeah, that was really average of me. Average. I personally I love that story. I love hearing about the creative process. I just selfishly wanted to ask about the creative process that went into my favorite song on the project, trance. Fire.

33:52

Can you tell me that's just the story of that song? Yeah, I would love that. It was a really funny day. Like, I just walked in the studio like on some sleepy energy, had my sunglasses on, didn't take them off for like probably three days. And like it was one of those weeks. Yeah. And um, we pulled up, Jube was in the studio. I had a random set. I'd never met him before, but a lot of the homies had met him. And um and Jody. And so they were just like, yo, what are you trying to fuck with? I was like, boom. Uh he he was like, I was like, I want some really simple, beautiful chords, and just like ripping like DMB kind of drums. Yes. And he like plays the first sample. He was like, I just made this today. So like played the sample. I was like, Yep. that's it. Perfect. Put it in. It's good. And but he was like, you don't want me to. I was like, no, no, no, no, just run it.

34:49

So boom, we start laying that down. I read it in like five minutes. First thing. I love that. This is your favorite song on the record. I love that. This is my favorite. One of my favorites on the record. You look genuinely so happy when he said can you tell me about trans. Yeah. I was like, oh shit, this is gonna be good. Yeah, it's just gonna be good. It's different, and it's energy and it rides and it's smooth and it's hard, and it's everything I want. So I'm sitting there, I'm like, fuck. What the heck? So I was like, just ate some mushrooms. I'm a vegetarian. Yes. And I was like, oh my god. First line. First line. Had you in fact just eaten some mushrooms? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And are you a vegetarian? Yeah, yeah, yeah. This guy spits truth. There's no cap in his rap. No cap in this guy's rap. Zero. Yeah, I'm an intuitive eater. Like, I if I need like a steak or something, like I'm gonna freak it. Like, I'm gonna go cook a steak at home and make it really nice. Oh, wow. But for the most part, like I'm definitely a vegetarian. Pescetarian type energy. Yo, what kind of day does it have to be for you to be like steak day boys? You know, what I mean? Like, champagne. Like, what's going on in your life. It's got to be celebratory steak. celebratory steak for sure.

35:53

Okay, okay or like uh like uh damn I haven't eaten in two weeks type steak. Oh wow. yeah, we need you to get the protein, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Um, but yeah, so uh that whole song is like um a trip, like it's describing a trip, and you're like essentially like okay, everything is groovy, but something's off, and then you like take a trip to figure it out, and you're like, okay, cool, and then you're like, what the fuck? And it's kind of about this like fear blanket that we're living under, you know what I mean? To a certain extent, like they have us afraid of so much shit, and not to be that guy with the vase, but you know what I'm saying, yeah, right, yeah. So yeah, like that's kind of that song. And we just kind of cooked it up really quick. I loved it. And um, yeah, it was one of the first songs I made when I when I moved to LA. I had made a whole album.

36:50

Um Yeah, I read that. Really? Yeah, like you had made basically a whole album, and then you were like, nah, fuck that. I'm starting over. I mean, obviously, some songs like made it, you said little Planet. Yeah, exactly. I think. and um Go Again, of course. Yeah, I think Nightlight. And No Doubt. but everything else is like brand new. And so yeah, uh we made this record, and it's still really hot, but for some reason it just didn't feel like what I wanted to do right now. And I had this idea of like what I what course I wanted it to take. Like the most important part of this album is the journey of the whole album. Like when you go on the journey, it's like oh shit to me. And from what I'm hearing back now from like the people that are listening. Um because it doesn't always align. Some people have their own completely different interpretations, and that's cool too, right? Right, yeah, but the ride is the ride, yeah. It's their ride, right? Yeah, so yeah. Um, but yeah, I made most of those, like Trance was one of the first songs I moved to LA, and then I made everything like really quickly after that. I didn't think any of those songs would be on an album.

37:54

I just made them as like let's warm up type shit. And then I went back home for the first time since being in LA, and I played my mom uh some of the songs in the car, and she was like, bro, what this is your album, and I was like, Oh, oh, yeah, okay, true, it's true, true true. Yo, shout out Ma Duke. Yeah, Yeah, shout out Mama Riz. She's like the best AR ever, yo. She'll tell me straight up, she's like, not that one, bro. Yeah, yeah. That's love. Damn. Yeah, but yo, she getting points on the record, or she should. She gets all the points. Okay, yeah. Technically, most definitely. Yeah, oh man. She's got a good ear. Yeah, I I kind of wanted to ask this, right? I mean, you had, I guess, napkins and Saturn in particular that were like went pretty bananas, right? Like they they millions of streams, like they went pretty fucking crazy, right? So when you're approaching this project, like how much pressure is it, man, to top what you've done before? Like, I don't know.

38:53

It just seems like once again, I'm a kind of an anxious, you know, dude. Like, I think about things a little too much, probably, right? And I'm like, I got these hits, right? Like, I got these bangers. How can I top it? Like, is it do you put like that kind of pressure on yourself? Can you guess? No, tell him no. Riz. Tell him none. Damn, zero, man. I didn't make those songs. Other than like my life pressure, which is high. Like, I feel like a lot of pressure within myself to like put what is in here into the world so that it doesn't disappear before I disappear. You know what I mean? But a number on Spotify, that that's not crossing your mind. I didn't make those songs with that in mind. Yes. I always started with the idea of like make the music that I want to listen to and it will be listened to. And from found from my first project, like I dropped that shit just okay, I don't know. Like someone's gonna hear it. And Pisces got picked up and like really ran, and it's a classic, and now it's statued on my stomach, and like it's a part of the world that I have created. And if I didn't believe that it would be listened to, then I probably wouldn't have been, you know.

39:54

But these songs I know that if they're meant to be heard, they're gonna be heard just like the rest of everything else. Damn. Yeah, I just fire. I I'm sure that a lot of artists though who don't have the same mental as you and like just approach to life, I'm sure they can't do it that way. I don't know, right? Like you'd think that some people that don't have that chill demeanor, are probably like psyching themselves out, maybe like when they're going in to make that next record, and like yeah, I mean, it's not chill though, it's war. Like you have to really like choose that. You know what I mean? It is chill, but it's at the same time, it's like they have that too. Everybody has this ability. It's just like you have to choose it. You know, you have to know it first, I guess, and then choose it. Are you competitive at all? Sometimes I do be competitive. Yeah. But like, I ran track in school, and like I was just competitive with myself. Like, I don't think about really anyone around me unless they're like helping me guide the pace. You know what I mean?

40:53

Which is like a lot of the artists that I'm fucking with, like, sometimes they just help me guide the pace. They're just like, okay, cool, we're doing this, like, fuck it, let's do this. Like, but I'm not running to beat them. I'm just running to run my fastest time. You know what I mean? Yeah. My PR. So, yeah. No, that's that's good. And and I think we talk about this mainly in the sense of the hip hop genre because like it's such a competitive genre. Like, you know, I think that helps people level up or whatever. But even you who are kind of like living tangentially to hip hop, you know, because like I said, you have a lot of influence, I would say, from you know, hip hop music. Like, it's it's nice to hear that you and the artists that are around you that arguably aren't like the traditional like rappers, right? I mean, I'm assuming at least a lot of people you have on the tour aren't rap artists, right? So it's cool to hear that they still also, even though you're not directly competing with each other, you kind of got this like let's level up together and like run our best races, you know, independently, you know what I mean? Yeah, we uh it's getting a little bigger.

41:55

Like we have a a pretty like growing community of just like artists that are trying to just bust out of any sort of mold and not ever be labeled as any genre. Cause I know, like, even this album, like still getting crazy, like all these different genre labels applying to like you know, all these different things. Like, yeah, what are they calling it? I don't know. Like, I want to say indie pop, indie alt pop, indie alt pop, indie alt pop. How does that feel? Does that feel accurate? Alt pop sounds like that's how I kind of described it to my 76. Doesn't make sense. That's how I described it to my 76-year-old dad. He was like, he was like, What is this? And I was like, I mean, it's kind of like alternative indie pop music. I literally did like say it like that. If it helps people like be ready to listen, I think we need that for some weird reason. Why do we, we like to, we like to have a little bit of like, familiarity? Yeah, familiarity.

42:54

One foot in something familiar, one foot in something like brand new. I've always said, I say this all the time that the best music always has something a little familiar and then something new. You can't go too familiar, too cookie cutter, but you can't go like too brand new because people kind of like are ready for that. So the best the best shit has elements of both. I think. Yeah, I think about this a lot. Yeah, it's a good one. I call it from like one foot and familiar, one foot in novelty. I don't remember where I heard that, but it really stuck with me when I heard it. Yeah, yeah. So, you know, I know this is probably like hard to talk about, but I think it's super important, and I think it's a big part of your story. We talked to Daniel, you know, Hartsog about this as well. Like, what was your relationship like with six? Shout out Six Dogs for sure. It's my brother, yeah. Yeah, twin flame for real. Uh yeah, when six passed, like you know, when you're with that person, like when you're with Chase, like there's so much love in the room, you just feel like, yo, like that is my best friend. Like, I love this fool.

43:56

Like, you know what I mean? And when he passed, it like really showed me, like, bro, he had that effect on so many people. Like, everyone really felt like, oh my god, that's my like. I re he always like, you know what I mean? Like, really connected deeply with people. And yeah, the time that we spent together, like, I just so distinctly remember every single one of our combos and every like, you know, just everything we did, and inspires me every day. I feel really close with him and connected to him, and I'm on a mission with him, you know. what I mean? So yeah, I uh like we were in um what's that town called in Georgia? We were filming the beach house videos like by the beach, and uh Savannah? Tybee Island. Oh, Tybee. Tybee Island. And uh he had just come back from Hawaii, I think, recently, and had this like big twin flame crystal quartz, and was like, yo, bro, like I want you to have this, like, and like yeah, just like really meant a lot. Like, he really saw me on so many different planes that people don't get to see me on, and get to like really like eye to eye me with and just feel like we can come up, like you know, just start from there instead of having to like catch up or anything like that.

45:18

We're like already on that plane and we're ready to go. And creating with him was really fun. Like, we really just like some of the easiest songs ever made, like it was so good that yeah, yeah. I think about him every day, and yeah, always with me. Yeah, it's it's wild, man. I, you know, for Daniel's interview, um, I did a bunch of research, and of course, six was you know a big part of his story, along with you. Like, you know, y'all's come up together has been insane. Like the fact that y'all basically betted on each other and have been just we're fucking doing this no matter what it takes, has been such an incredible like story to have researched and now like be a part of, right? Um, but just doing the research and like looking up, you know, six and just seeing the photos of him and like the music videos and listening to his music because I I wasn't even super familiar or tapped in with like his discography. And I I feel what you're saying, bro.

46:16

Yeah, it's like this, even just you know, posthumously, right? Like after his passing and me just hearing the stories from Daniel and obviously Jackson and and you and just like doing my research and shit. Like, I feel that same thing of just like and it like hurts me to have like you know, heard these stories and know that he's gone when like he clearly did have that impact on so many people and even people that didn't know him at all from shit. You know what I mean? That that's what I found like pretty crazy about the whole thing. I super enjoyed the couple songs you did at the uh Halloween show at the Masquerade, the couple of the six songs. Yeah, the tribute ones that were with six. Oh man, I just the energy like kicked it out. It was already high, but it like went up a notch. Yeah, we're in those stem hunting right now, so we'll have those for the rest of the tour too. Cool. How how does I always wonder like about like posthumous releases, you know, who's in charge of that? Is there any chance album was already done? Right.

47:11

So he had already finished it, he already knew it. He had already turned it in, and we were we were ready to drop it. I think a week before it ended up getting or two weeks before it ended up getting pushed back. But it was supposed to drop like the week uh of my birthday. Um and then uh yeah, pushed back a couple weeks, but yeah, he had already made all those songs and celebrated them. And yeah. So it was a little easier in that case because he had put a pin in it. I think they're planning something for um for the future. Um for sure. Hell yeah. I love that. I I definitely look forward to that. So obviously we got the rest of the tour. Shout out Swan Johnson and everybody And Alex. Yes, yes. and Taj and everybody, Sam. Yeah, definitely. So we got the tour, you know, coming up. Anything else you want to make sure that the people are like, you know, looking forward to 2023. Anything else that we should be aware of, or just kind of pushing Haven and touring it out. A lot of gas on the pedal, not just Haven.

48:10

Please learn Haven and sit with it and and be there because we have a lot more coming. It's already ready to go. Absolutely. Yeah. Um, but tour and come say hi and uh bring bring stuff, bring bring whatever. Um, sometimes flowers, sometimes rocks, like stones. Yeah. And uh yeah, just thank you. Thank you really. But don't throw them at Riz when you're there. High key. You're saying something about that on the left too. Like I enjoy when you guys bring the rocks, the stones, but don't stone me. Yeah, that's some medieval shit. Yeah. So Henry, we've entered a final segment of the podcast. Wrap us up, my man. Oh shit. Oh shit, Riz. Oh, it's about to go down. Yep. It is piped up already. Absolutely. Riz LaVie, this is the rapid fire rampage. It's about to get intense. It's about to get intense. It's a three-part rampage.

49:06

This is this is the finale. This is all for all the marbles. This is the fireworks right here at the end. Um, I'll explain each section as we go. The first part is just some short answer questions, just rapid fire off the top of your head. Let's see what happens. Let's go. First question is very philosophical. I'm just gonna get the really deep, crazy question out of the way. Bet that. How are you doing? Good. Fire. Fire. Riz, you can make a collaboration project with any one artist or producer, dead or alive. Who are you choosing? Shit. Oh, gotta go Quincy Jones, I think. Shout out, Quincy. Riz, if animals could talk, which species would be the meanest. Uh probably dolphins, man. Dolphins? The meanest? Yeah, like dickhead. For some reason, I think dolphins are the most capable of just being a little dickheads. Because they're so cute, they get away with it.

50:04

No, they're like arrogant, probably, right? Like they think they're so smart. They also like rape each other. I've heard some crazy shit. I've heard some crazy things about dolphins for sure. Yeah. Yo, Ixnay on the ape ray, bro. Jesus. Alright, ape ray. Hey, I can't. YouTube's listening, bro. Yeah, they are. We're demonetized on this. episode. I thought this was a lightning round. It is. Sorry. I'm sorry. Uh Riz, invent an app right now. Yeah, so what does your app do? I've had so many of these ideas. Yes. I thought this was a lightning round. Yeah, shit. Oh my god. You thought we didn't have the Jeopardy music? So yeah, you got an app. Um, it takes all of the photos on your phone and organizes them in a way where you can no Wait. Fuck that. Wait, that was the that was something. Yeah. I don't know. Trust your gut, bro. Like by style, like or by type of picture. Yeah, like I want to just be able to see them better.

51:02

Like it's so annoying. Like time doesn't do it for me. Like all the selfies, all the landscapes, all my pets, like I wanna know. I want to see it better. Photo organization app. Photo, photo organizational app. Keep that. That's fire. Let's rock it. This is kind of a sad one. Moving on, but you must remove one color from the world. Which color do you get rid of? Oh shit, that's crazy. Yeah. Remove? Gotta be gone forever. Gani. what color gets removed? Yeah. Low key my inkling. Nah, yellow's too happy. This is a lightning round. Damn. Take away the blues, man. Even though it's my favorite shit, take them away. Wow. No more blues. It does represent. Wait, maybe red. What happens if we get rid of red? Let's get rid of red. Fuck it. Okay, red's gone. I'm I'm way more happy with that answer. Right. Blue is fire, right? Yeah. Carolina Blue. We can't get rid of it. man. Okay, I bet that. Yeah. This is uh another deep philosophical question.

51:59

Okay. When it comes to wiping, stander or sitter? Uh like to wipe. Uh I mean like maybe half, like a squat. Like a squatter. Yeah. He's a hybrid. Hybrid. It's a good one. Middle ground. Okay. Good. Riz, what do you call a male ladybug? Ladybug. ladybug. That's actually probably true. Yeah. Okay. Um, couple more here on the first part. We're gonna need your phone for this one. Can you whip it out? Yeah. I'm gonna need you to open Instagram. All right. You're gonna go to your DMs. Okay. Go seven down. One, two. In my mains, like my primaries? Sure. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Who is it and what was the last conversation? It's Popstar Benny. Oh, one more time alone as well. Shout out, Benny. It's Popstar Benny in this video from my show? From last night? Oh, shit. Oh, because you got hella mentions from the show, huh? Yeah. Yeah. That's fire.

52:56

He was taking hella videos, by the way. And he's so tall. He had the best view Yeah, He had the best view in the house. I almost wanted to hand him my phone to just get a better angle. Right. Right. Shout out, Benny. Shout out, Benny. Yeah, it's Popstar. Okay, Popstar. Popstar. Love that tag. Last one of the short answer. What is your favorite curse word? Fuck! Part one. Part one. Pretty good. Good. answers. The hell. He clapped at us for not going fast enough. Yeah, yeah. No, that was motivation. First guest to ever do that. Motivation. I love it. I love it. That's great. Part two is a this or that. I'm gonna give you two choices. I love that. Pick one. Easy. Or it is. Yeah. Could be this. Don't commit. Here we go. Part two. All right, man. This or that. Yeah. Riz LaVie. Yeah. Episode 93. Cool. Singing or rapping. Like I'm a hybrid. Yeah, pick one. No, let's not get this habit going. Okay. Rapping? Ooh, interesting. Guitar or synth? Guitar.

53:52

808 or bass guitar. Bass guitar. Even though it's 808 for real, but bass guitar, I think. Are you saying that for the clout? Or like what what are you what's going on? I know it's 808 more characters. 808 for real because, like, yes, but I think I want to stop using 808s in the future because uh I'm trying to like elevate this whole shock rule system.
